It’s raining films!

The 24th edition of the European Union Film Festival is on with another cache of films to feast on. The 15 day festival with two evening screenings is organized jointly by the Cinephile Film Club of the Entertainment Society of Goa in collaboration with the European External Action Service, Directorate of Film Festival and Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (Govt. of India) the country over annually. Discerning moviegoers may catch all or some films selectively. Altogether 22 films are being screened and they’re some of the latest award-winning European films. All films are English sub-titled. Venue: Audi 1, Maquinez Palace, ESG Complex, Panaji. Date: Ongoing from July 4 up to July 18. Time: 5.30pm & 7.30pm. Details: Check schedule at the venue. FILMS
`Remembering Kurdi’: A film by Saumyananda Sahi. Screening will be followed by a discussion with editor of the film Tanushree Das. The film traces the story of Kurdi village which was submerged by the Salaulim Dam waters three decades ago, but to this day members of the 550 families who were displaced and had to forge new lives for themselves elsewhere, remember and return to the lost paradise of their village when the waters recede for a few weeks…it’s a day of memories, performing memorial rituals and taking pleasure in small joys of a bygone life. MUSIC
Semi-Classical & Devotional Songs: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations in collaboration with Gomant Vidya Niketan is presenting this musical evening featuring artiste Ashvini Modak from Pune. Venue: Fomento Amphitheatre, Gomant Vidya Niketan, Madgaon. Date: Saturday/July 13. Time: 6pm

Ukulele Workshop: Ukulele Clube De Goa in association with Maxie’s Music & Dance Academy conducts ukulele classes and teaches you to sing your favorite songs. Look up details and register if interested. Venue: Music & Dance Academy, Panaji. Date: Every Monday. Time: 5pm to 6pm

EVENTS
Chikal kalo (Mashel): A fascinating local Goan event dating back to over 400 years, it is believed to have moved to Marcel from Chorao along with the temple of old during Portuguese rule. Over 300 revelers observe this day with games in which mud plays an important role! Venue: Ground opposite Devaki Krishna Temple, Marcel. Date: Saturday/July 13. Time: 9am onwards

Bal Bhavan’s Greeting Cards Design Competition: Design greeting cards for the Bal Bhavan! The two categories are General for class 5 to class 7; Group B for class 8 to 10 and Group C for class 11 to 12. Special category is for hearing impaired, mentally challenged and slow learners. Contests will take place at Bal Bhavan, Panaji; Mata Secondary School, Baina, Vasco; New Goa High School, Mapusa; Government High School, near Janaki Hospital, Ponda; Bhagwati High School, Pernem; Shantadurga High School, Bicholim; Hanuman Vidyalaya, Valpoi; Gomantak Vidyalaya, Dharbandora; Holy Cross Institute, Quepem; Mallikarjun High School, Canacona; Union High School, Sanguem; and Loyala High School, Margao. Short Story Competition: Fundacao Oriente is hosting its 5th Goan Short Story Competition 2019. Anyone over 18 years and customarily residing in Goa, amateur or professional (including previous winners) are eligible. Stories may be written in Konkani, Marathi, Portuguese or English, they must be original and unpublished and limited to maximum 3,000 words. Last date for acceptance of entries is before August 30. KALA ACADEMY GOLDEN JUBILEE
POPULAR and much-loved Kala Academy is all set to celebrate its Golden Jubilee Year (5th year) on Monday, July 15, 2019. Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant will be chief guest at the inaugural function which will followed by a presentation of Kala Tarang’ – a special program presenting the major role played by the Kala Academy in the cultural development to Goa. While speaking to media people Minister for Art & Culture Govind S Gaude (chairperson of KA) said that the credit for the program’s conceptualization goes to Dr Prakash Vazrikar and Dr Purnanand Chari. The program offers 50 years of progressive Goa through live performances, songs, folk music and dancing, also video clips, all tracing the institution’s dedication in promoting various activities ranging from literature, dance, drama, music, visual, and much more. Program will be anchored by Dr Purnanand Chari and Dr Rupa Chari. Apart from this,Purva Rang’ will showcase Goan folk arts, a program co-ordinated by Ajay Naik.
