LOKUTSAV

A much-loved festival is here, it’s organized by Directorate of Art & Culture (Goa) in collaboration with West Zone Cultural Centre (Udaipur), CCP, Kala Academy and Sports Authority of Goa. The fair offers amazing traditional as well as modern collections of art and craft, all kinds of attire for men, women and children, costume jewelry, household furniture and other useful items, plus there will be lots of food products fresh and preserved. Not to be missed. Venue: Darya Sangam, Kala Academy Campus, Panaji. Date: Jan10 to 19. Time: Regular hours, plus there are folk dances and music at the venue from 6.30pm onwards.

MUSIC/PERFORMANCES
Goa Yuva Mahotsav: This is the 25 edition of the socio-cultural musical which has evolved over the years to become very popular with Goans. The celebration was established in 1996 by the Konkani Bhasha Mandal with the aim of keeping youth in touch with the rich traditional culture of the performing folk arts in Goa. According to KBM President Vallabh Barve on an average the mahotsav engages engages over 3,500 youth, this year they have lined up something like 17 competitions and expect a huge audience. Competition brochures have been sent out to colleges and entries accepted online, data processing done through special software designed for the festival. There is folk dancing and street plays, and dance groups including Siddhant Gadekar, Ashwini Franco, D-Malice Dance group, Pooja and Aparna Dance Academy, Stop on Dance Crew and many more. The festival is a treat and open to all (although competition participation is open only for registered groups). Venue: Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. Date: Jan17 to 19. Fado Concert: Fadista Sonia Shirsat has curated a fado concert featuring students of Fado de Goa. It’s a hour-long concert after Fado de Lisboa style and musicians Orlando de Noronha, Carlos Meneses and Dr Allan Abreu will accompany on the Portuguese guitar, viola do fado and 12-string guitar, respectively. Tado de Goa is an ongoing project to popularize fado music, it was established in 2017 and has since tutored five batches of over 300 students of varied age. The project is supported by various foundations. Plus, post-concert be sure to take in the food stalls to enjoy local food and flavors. Venue: Saligao Institute, Saligao. Date: Sat/Jan11. Piano Recital: Winner of National OJCF Competition Anuvrat Choudhary is presenting a piano recital, program includes Franz Schubert, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Brahms, Franz Liszt, John Field, Frederic Chopin, Debussy and Scarlatti. Venue: Art chamber, Calangute. Date: Sat/Jan11. Time: 7.30pm

Cosfest Goa 2020: This festival of performances is in its third edition and an extension of Chowgule College of Arts & Science Visual Literature (Comics Studies) course. It gets bigger and better every year. Cosfest celebrates “cosplay” meaning costume drama in which role-playing and prop-making is created to depict familiar characters from TV, films, comics, pop culture and games. The event is open to all from six years to 60 and promises a good time for all. Venue: Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts & Science, Margao. Date: Jan13. `India as a Rising Power, Opportunities & Constraints in 21st Century’: A panel discussion with Prof TV Paul (International Relations, McGill University, Canada) and former Chief of Naval Staff and former Admiral Arun Prakash, moderated by ICG Director Pushkar. Understanding Our Solar System: The Vasco Astronomical Observatory is reopening to the general public and will remain open every Sunday. On this occasion listen to a talk on the subject of our solar system by Devansh Cholera. Free for general public. Venue: Ravindra Bhavan, Baina, Vasco da Gama. Date: Sun/Jan12. Time: 7pm to 9pm

Bird Festival of Goa
The 3rd annual bird festival of Goa organized by the forest department every year was officially launched by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant with release of promotional teaser and merchandise at Altinho on Jan8, 2020. Present for the launch were Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Subhash Chandra (IFS), Santosh Kumar (additional principal chief conservator of forests) Chief Wildlife Warden Santosh Kumar (IFS), Deputy Conservator of Forests (North) Kuldeep Sharma (IFS) and Sub Divisional Forest Officer Anand Jadhav. Few people know that Goa is a paradise for bird lovers with something like 450 species of birds to be seen in places like Caramboli Lake, Navelim wetlands, Raia-Curtorim wetlands and six protected areas including the Salim Ali bird Sanctuary on Chorao island which is rich in avian diversity.
