WHAT IS VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY?By Pankajbala R Patel

AMERICA’s oldest sitting president of USA, Donald Trump, is suffering from venous insufficiency and so do a lot of other folk! I too am suffering from venous insufficiency judging by the dark patches on my left foot, more than the right foot…these bluish, darkish patches are a cause for concern especially since I have stopped walking more or less outside the home! When I go out I’m glued to my two-wheeler which takes me down the street shopping for household needs in a couple of early morning rides out every week.
But to stay with venous insufficiency, it a condition which happens when veins have trouble moving blood back to the heart efficiently. It’s a chronic affliction affecting general overall health. Legs may swell up and bruise feet and hands because of a cardiovascular system drying up and little nitric oxide to keep it flexible, courtesy a whole host of other things happening or not happening – much of it rooted in the lifestyles of ease and plenty we’re trapped in for a myriad reasons.
With venous insufficiency various studies have to be undergone with comprehensive examination using diagnostic tools. Doppler ultrasounds have to performed amongst other studies to come to a conclusion. Very often doctors can do nothing in the case of senior patients and they say vascular insufficiency is just a benign, common condition especially in those over the age of 70 years. As long as there is no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease you are more or less good. But make sure laboratory testing includes a “complete a complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, coagulation profile, d-dimer, b-type naturetic peptide, and cardiac biomarkers.”
If all within normal limits, no worries. An echocardiogram can confirm normal cardiac structure and function. No signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness…standard cardiovascular prevention regimen is to take an aspirin. If skin bruises easily skip the idea of too many hearty handshakes (as President Trump has been advised, he has taken to doing “Nameste” with folded hands reportedly). Bruising happens easily with soft tissue irritation through constant handshaking and also the regular use of aspirin, which is standard cardiovascular prevention advice. This is a well-known. You can all other things stable continue to be in good health, no need to count your days yet. en ankles, bruised hands are okay.
Yes, symptoms of venous insufficiency also include varicose veins, pain, discomfort and in rare cases venous ulcers, sores that take unusually long to heal. Check out for signs of heart failure for it is important to rule out evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease. An echocardiogram will reveal signs of heart failure, renal impairment or systemic illness.

Acccording to a doctor speaking on CNN, about 150,000 people are diagnosed with the condition of venous insufficiency annually. It’s normal part of ageing and especially for someone overweight or in obese category. Chronic venous insufficiency may also be related to increased pressure from the heart or sleep apnea, according to Dr Bernard Ashby, “Even though diagnosed with a benign condition, venous insufficiency, by itself, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s benign. The question is what’s causing the venous insufficiency? Increased pressures on the heart or increased pressures in the lungs which can be contributing…”
This is to say do not neglect your heart when the symptoms are there to see on your feet, after all one wit once said, “We start dying feet upwards.” Take a look at your feet today and everyday make some time to take care of them, give them a massage with love and affection! If signs of venous insufficiency are there check it out quickly.
