KBC Toxic kids who is to blame
Uncategorized October 24, 2025By Rajan Narayan
Before labelling the alpha kids as “impertinent,” “spoiled”’ or “bratty,” it would serve us well to understand the mechanics behind their behaviour….
I HAVE been following the debate on alpha kids on Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). Yes, they may seem impertinent, spoiled, rotten, bratty and so many other things. But look at the pressure on them. To be able to get to the hot seat itself is a huge achievement. Only the smartest and the most competitive make it. The kids, all mere 10-year-olds or so are living out their parent’s dreams.
They are under tremendous pressure to perform. It intensifies as they cross every obstacle and try to reach the victory point. The fastest-finger-first, which decides who sits opposite Big B to play, in itself, is nerve- wrecking.
It is a high-stakes game. Each question is like playing Russian roulette. Even adults can’t handle such pressure, then how can they expect their children to handle it? More than the kids on the hot seat, the faces of the parents reflect the pressure.
When the kids exit, far short of the seven-crore jackpot, there is no sympathy but fury on the faces of the minders. That says it all. The body language of the slinking kids, says it. There will be no fatted calf or even a pizza for the kid who failed.
On the flip side, I am amazed by the natural intelligence of the kids. There was a young man, who was an abacus ustad, and another one who had mastered tables up to 99 times. Like the late Shakuntala Devi, he brushed off the complex math problems. There was another 10-year-old, who had mastered coding and wanted to develop an indigenous operating system.
Unlike the Gen X, Y and Z, the alpha kids have king-sized dreams. One 10-year-old was not content with being a pilot. He wanted to own an airline. And, of course, drive all the high-end cars. He named them all – Bugatti, Jaguar, BMW and so many others.
Many wanted to be astronauts. One of them went a step further and announced he wanted to become an aerospace engineer. Another one wanted to become a French teacher as he had heard they got Rs3 lakh a month as salary.
Not all of them are mercenaries. There was this charming young lady – all of 12 years old – who had memorised the entire Bhagvat Geeta. And, she recites wake-up shlokas, pre-lunch thanksgiving and sleep-well shlokas – all in Sanskrit. She could explain their meanings too. Lage Raho Alpha Kids.
Gen Alpha is about dating with dreams. Even caterpillars can become multi-hued butterflies. Except that these kids don’t realise they have to go through an incubation period. There is no instant crorepatis in real life except on KBC. And, a crore does not last very long.
The biggest challenge for the Alpha kids is negotiating social media. Parents have no control over what the kids are reading. What they are hearing or watching. Social media glorifies money. The likes of Adanis, Ambanis and Elon Musks are the new icons.
Narayan Murthy with his talk of 12 working days is toxic. Taylor Swift is the flavour of our times. The Marxists and the Socialists have been driven out of the social media, which has been taken over by fanatic Hindutva, Vandas, Islamophobics, lunatics and extremists of all shades.
Love and even compassion have no place on the Planet Internet. Parents have to step in so that kids don’t self-destruct. Not with a heavy hand but with tender loving care (TLC).
