The fire at Birch By Romeo Lane in Arpora has raised a din of relentless and widespread corruption in Sawant administration; and Goans are demanding nothing less than accountability from him

It appears like the Birch by Romeo Lane fire may consume Chief Minister Promod Sawant. It is evident in the way even the high priest of the Godi media – term used for lapdog media – Arnab Goswami has started gunning for him.
On Monday, at prime time, a former senior BJP MLA from Saligao Dilip Parulekar and former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes accused the Sawant government of gross incompetence and relentless corruption.
The Arpora Sarpanch claimed that the down payment for approving an illegal club was Rs10 lakh while the monthly payoff was Rs1 lakh. The South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes put the figure much higher at Rs 25 lakh.
There is general agreement among everyone that a lot of money has flown into the Baga creek and other water ways. The Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) offers huge pickings for the politicians and their cohorts.
Given that there are 200 nightclubs, with a capacity of 150-500 seatings and minimum entry fee ranging from Rs500 to Rs5000 per table cover, one can imagine the turnover earned by these illegally operated commercial establishments by politician and those involved in it.
These are all-cash transactions. There is no GST on entry on nightclubs. And, conveniently, there are the casinos next door to whitewash the black money.
Based on these speculations, it’s time Pramod Sawant, as the State home minister, took direct responsibility for not carrying out the high court order of demolition in the Romeo Lane case and not ensuring adequate fire safety measures at the premise.
Sawant should have sacked Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho for staying the demolition order by the village Panchayat and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte for allowing Romeo Lane shack to be built on public beach land encroaching on tourism department property.
And, who should be blamed for the blatant large-scale irregularities and illegalities in the Cape Goa property at the Cabo de Rama?
Sawant must go as he has no control over governance in Goa. He has been silent, if not colluded with Town and Country Planning (TCP) Minister Vishwajit Rane or Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar or Revenue Minister Atanasio Babush Monserrate. The CM has not even been able to take the director general of police (DG) or the superintend of police (SP) to task.
Clearly, Sawant has become a liability and it is time for him to commit Sati – an act self-immolation to preserve honour or express devotion for someone. Waiting in the wings are Damu Naik, president of Goa BJP and Utpal Parrikar, son of former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar and BJP politician.
