GODI MEDIA TRUMPS TRUTH IN WAR & PEACE!

GODI MEDIA TRUMPS TRUTH IN WAR & PEACE!

April 11- April 17, 2026, Stray Thoughts

AND a few stray thoughts for yet another Saturday. For a Saturday following the week when the godi media appears to have trumped the truth. For a Saturday following the week when the political twist of the Enough to Enough movement. For a Saturday following the week when the irony of the richest mine owners being forced to inhale coal dust in their palaces in the port town of Vasco da Gama. For a Saturday following the week when the cashew festival starting this Friday, April 5. For a Saturday following the week when the shortage of gas has started affecting traditional Goan eateries and takeaways.
AND a few stray thoughts on when the godi media appears to have trumped the truth. We do not know whom to believe when we watch the electronic media or scan the headlines in the print media any longer. No one of course believes anything over the social media. Do we believe the US version of what is happening in Iran. Do we believe the version put out by Israel? Or do we go by what the Alzeera and Iran official spokesperson say about the war which is now over a month old.
According to Donald Trump the regime in Iran has been changed half-a-dozen times not by the people of Iran but by the assassination of a succession of leaders. According to Trump the army, the air force and the navy of Iran has been destroyed, but Iran continues to fight back. It continues to spread terror among its Muslim neighbors in the Gulf, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. Iran even has managed to shoot down the very sophisticated American planes. Trump claims that the US Marines have rescued their American pilot from deep inside Iran.
Iran insists that it was an attempt to steal their uranium stockpiles and Iran had managed to prevent it. By the time this appears we will know whether Trump has carried out his threat of destroying the ancient Persian civilization. It is incredible that the 250 years old Yankee civilization should claim to have destroyed the 9000 years old Iranian civilization. But we should not be surprised because we have our own godi media or should we say Modi media.
According to the Modi media Mamata Banerjee is evil. According to godi media Stalin of Tamilnadu is a threat not to Hindutva but to Hindi rashtra. According to Modi the Congress Marxist aligned government in Kerala is full of urban Naxalites. According to Modi the Election Commission is very honest. According to Rahul Gandhi the Election Commission are vote chor. Mamta claims that they have stolen 27 lakh Trinamool Congress votes.
What does one believe? Whom does one believe” We at Goan Observer will try to tell you the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

ENOUGH IS NOT ENOUGH
AND a few stray thoughts on the political twist of the Enough to Enough movement. Apparently, the former chief justice has realized that he would not get any justice from Chief Minister of Goa Pramod Sawant and least of all from the TCP minister Vishwajeet Rane. That the BJP government in Goa will continue to cut hills, destroy water bodies and convert cashew orchards into commercial and real estate towers.
Ferdino Rebello must have realized that the BJP government in Goa does not take President Murmu seriously. That they are only afraid of Modi-jee and his faithful executor Amit Shah. Ferdino Rebello must have realized that Modi and Amit Shah find it profitable to convert Goa into a builders paradise. Not only a builders paradise but a supplier of coal to Vijaynagar in Bellary in Karnataka. With a lot of help from Gautam Adani. Ferdino Rebello has realized that Enough is Not Enough. That he cannot any longer function as a part-time activist in between arbitration work in Mumbai.
Justice Ferdino Rebello has obviously realized that consultations in closed halls do not have any impact. That the time has come for confrontation. Which is why the former chief justice is talking about a mass movement Jayprakash Narayan-style who we would like to inform the chief justice was not Gandhian. In fact, the Jayprakash Narayan movement was extremely violent.
It may be recalled that George Fernandes stopped the Indian Railways for over 10 days. That JP asked the police not to obey the orders of the government of the day. The question is can a former chief justice ask people to break bad laws or as Justice Mahesh Sonak commented, “It is our duty to speak out when we see injustice. Perhaps it is time to re-define the “Algebra of Infinite Injustice” Arundhati Roy-style.

INHALE COAL DUST
AND a few stray thoughts on the irony of the richest mine owners being forced to inhale coal dust in their palaces in the port town of Vasco da Gama. Some of the richest mine owners – the Salgaocars, the Chowgules, and the Bandekars amongst others – have their homes in the city of Vasco. For years and decades the mine owners were accused of inflicting iron ore dust on the villages where their mining operations were conducted. They were accused of causing dust pollution during the transport of the ore. At the peak of mining hundreds of trucks used to hurtle past the narrow village roads of Curchorem, Sarvodem, Bicholim…making it difficult for school children to breathe. For years and decades the mining lobby tried to bury complaints of respiratory diseases in the mining areas.
Now the shoe is on the other foot. The port city is being blackened every day by the coal dust courtesy the coal imported and transported through the Mormugoa port. There is coal dust pollution when the dirty coal is transported by road and train from Vasco through the coastal districts of Goa to the Jindal steel plant in Karnataka. The children and the grandchildren of the mine owners of Vasco are being covered by layers of coal dust. Their grandchildren are breathing coal dust. The people of Vasco are protesting, the people of south Goa are protesting, but there are no protests from the mining barons who are living in Vasco.
Vasco is the headquarters of naval aviation in the country. It is home to thousands of naval officers and their families. Many naval officers including former admiral the late Prakash has settled in Vasco. None of them are willing to take on the coal pollution in Vasco. The coal is not even needed for Goa unless of course all the restaurants and hotels in Goa are willing to switch to coal for cooking instead of elusive gas cylinders. Check why you have not got your OPT signaling availability even after you have paid for a re-fill every month.

CASHEW FESTIVAL
AND a few stray thoughts on the cashew festival starting this Friday, April 5. The cashew festival comes at a time when the cashew industry is going through a crisis. The production of cashew nuts is declining year after year. It is claimed that only 50% of the cashew crop has survived this year. Apparently, the experiment of using so called hybrid cashew grafts from neighbouring Sindhudurg has not worked. It is not widely known that many cashew kings of Goa have shifted to Sindhudurg because Maharashtra offers much better incentives.
Indeed, it is claimed that now Goa is importing cashew nuts from the African countries for processing, so much so not all the cashew nuts labeled premium Goan cashew nuts are of Goan origin. The problem is at the prices that cashew nuts sell they have become unaffordable. Even the airlines which used to offer cashew nuts as a snack on their domestic flights have stopped doing so. Even in 5-star bars you can only get peanuts now and not cashew nuts as a crunchy to go with drinks. But the Zantye’s seem to be flourishing.
We still fail to understand why there should be fashion shows at a cashew festival. Will the models come dressed as cashew nuts or cashew feni bottles? And no Goan festival is complete without song and dance and ros-omlet and chicken xacuti.

GAS SHORTAGE
AND a last stray thought on when the shortage of gas has started affecting traditional Goan eateries and takeaways. The owner of Café Central Rajesh Gaitonde has revealed that their production is down by 50%, they are not any longer able to offer their trademark mushroom samosa or onion biscuits. There is a similar refrain from Café Tate and Café Bhonsale, not to mention Café Real. No deep fries items any longer. No mirsang bhoji or kanda bhoji but the puri-bhaji which is at the core of business continues to be available. Interestingly, south Indian snacks are being consumed more frequently nowadays than the traditional Goan snacks.
