Sep 13- Sep 19, 2025, WEEKEND UPDATES September 12, 2025A BOOK titled “River Mhadei: The Science and Politics of Diversion” by Prof Nagendra Rao and co-edited by Dr Peter Ronald d’Souza is being released at Seminar Hall, Social Science Faculty building of Goa University on Sept 16, 2025 at 3.30pm. It will be accompanied by a screening of the documentary “Mhadei” by Gaspar D’Souza, Shrinivas Anant Narayan and Ethan D’souza. Rajendra Kelkar and Sujata Noronha will participate in the discussion. The book will be launched by Justice Ferdino Rebello, former chief justice of the Allahabad High Court.
50 YEARS OF INDIAN EMERGENCY

A BOOK commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared by the late prime minister of India Indira Gandhi in 1975 is being released at the International Centre Goa on Friday , Sept 19, 2025 at 5.30pm. The book is titled “50 Years of the Indian Emergency: Lessons for Democracy” and the function will be chaired by Kumar Ketkar, former editor of the “Maharashtra Times” as also former MP. The discussion will be led by Dr Peter Ronald de Souza, former director at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla. Dr De Souza was the first HOD of political science at the Goa University. The other participants are Lakshmi Subramanian, honorary professor, BITs Pilani, and Gopal Guru, former editor of the “Economic & Political Weekly.”
DRUGS DRIVE SUICIDE

THE Goa police claim that the 20-year-old student, Krishna Kasera who committed suicide recently at BITS Pilani campus was a drug addict. SP of Police Tikam Singh Verma claims random tests of the dead boy have confirmed the presence of narcotics during the post-mortem done. The parents in the student, however, have strongly denied the police claim.
XAVIER’S GOA RANKED 8TH

THE Xavier’s higher secondary school has been ranked 8th in India and first in Goa in the category of the best government aided schools. The award was presented at a ceremony held on Sept 10 in New Delhi. The school and college was started soon after Liberation by the Society of Jesus.
SUB-STANDARD CASHEWNUTS

THE Food & Drugs administration has seized and destroyed 200 kg of sub-standard cashew nuts from shops in Candolim and Calangute. It has long been suspected that there was large scale adulteration of cashew nuts in the state. Several so called factories are being accused of faking cashew nuts. The FDA has intensified the drive against false cashew nuts. The adulterated cashew nuts are reportedly made from a combo of inferior quality imported cashews mixed with some white flour, they look like real cashews. Caju lovers are warned to be carefully while buying cashew nuts, ensure that they are the real cashew nuts.

With AI-enabled ultraportable digital X-Ray systems

IF there is one thing Health Minister Vishwajit Rane likes to do it is to get the latest state-of-the-art diagnostic tools for healthcare. Goa healthcare, he says, is at the forefront of healthcare innovation from AI-driven TB screening to life-saving ambulance services and free medicines for the underprivileged, he says, “Our mission is clear, to ensure accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for every citizen.”
He was speaking at a special function held recently on the occasion of the Rotary Foundation Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera, in association with Rotary Club of Dona Paula and Rotary International Districts –3640 (South Korea), 5930 (USA) and 3170 (India) – to hand over the AI-Enabled Ultraportable Digital X-rays System, to the Directorate of Health Services, government of Goa, under Global Grant GG2478242.
While expressing his gratitude to the role played by Rotarians in supporting Goa’s healthcare infrastructure, the health minister said the advanced diagnostic Centres (PHCs), will be installed namely at PHC Navelim, PHC Betki, PHC Curtorim and PHC Corlim. According to CII–EY HealthTech Survey 2025 IT innovation budgets in Indian hospitals are set to rise by 20–25% over the next 2–3 years. At the 8th edition of CII Hospital Tech 2025 on the theme “Healthcare Roadmap for Viksit Bharat,” Vishwajit P Rane announced the new TB diagnostics, AI powered digital X-ray systems, saying that this is reportedly at the forefront of Truenat molecular diagnostic platform, a portable, battery-operated device developed by the Goa-based company Molbio Diagnostics, for rapid and accurate TB diagnosis. The initiative aims to aims for early detection and timely treatment of TB in rural areas and it can also aid in detecting other conditions like lung cancer.
He also added that, “With guidance from experts and partnerships across industry, startups, and research institutions, Goa is building one of India’s most inclusive and forward-looking healthcare ecosystems. Together, we are shaping a healthier future and contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat.”
The Summit also saw the release of the CII–EY HealthTech Survey 2025 and the flagship report titled “Unleashing Digital Momentum to Shape the Future of Healthcare”, which reveals that IT innovation budgets in Indian hospitals are set to rise by 20–25% over the next 2–3 years, with nearly half of healthcare providers already allocating 20–50% of their spends to digital innovation. The report underscores automation in patient experience, clinical outcomes, and data-driven decision-making, while flagging barriers such as legacy systems, workforce readiness, and patient-centric delivery.
Present at the function were Prakash Abitkar (Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare, government of Maharashtra), Rizwan Koita (Chairperson, NABH & Co-founder, Koita Foundation and CitiusTech) who said, “India is leading the way by aligning clinical, digital, and software standards. At NABH, we believe collaboration across hospitals, industry, and specialists will drive safer, smarter, and more inclusive healthcare for every patient.”
