A Celebration of Limitless Potential Unveiling the Spectrum
Uncategorized October 11, 2025By Dr. Amit Dias
THE vibrant hues of a Goan red and blue sunset are preparing to merge with a deeper, more profound shade — as the International Purple Fest Goa 2025 brings a message of hope and reasons to celebrate inclusion. From October 9 to 12, 2025 this landmark global event, isn’t just a festival; it’s a powerful declaration. It’s a testament that we are not here to mourn disability, but to jubilantly celebrate ability, to embrace our collective differences, and to foster an environment where every individual can blossom to their fullest potential.
The Purple fest is organised by the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, government of Goa, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, government of India and United Nations India.
Purple, a colour often synonymous with power, dignity, and independence, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this movement. It’s the banner under which we champion equal participation and empower individuals with disabilities.
THIS festival is a crucible of inclusive thinking, designed to forge universal design as a way of life, not merely an afterthought. It’s a grand tapestry woven with diverse experiences and opportunities, promising to ignite minds and uplift spirits.
What to Expect at the Purple Fest?
We can expect a kaleidoscope of inclusion. The Purple fest is an intricately designed experience, each zone a unique facet of this inclusive diamond:
Purple Think Tank: Prepare to dive headfirst into a vibrant hub of knowledge and ideas. This is where crucial conversations on education, health, disaster management, and gender equality will take centre stage, challenging preconceptions and fostering innovative solutions.

It’s a bustling marketplace of diversity, accessibility and inclusion, where persons with disabilities, NGOs, organizations, and artisans from across the nation unite in a joyous celebration. Imagine a street buzzing with energy, where every interaction is a step towards a more understanding world.
Purple Experience Zones: Step into a realm meticulously crafted to reflect the realities and challenges of navigating life with a disability. These zones offer a profound opportunity to walk in another’s shoes, to understand the ingenious advancements being made, and to gain a deeper, empathetic understanding of diverse experiences. This is where empathy transforms into tangible action.
Purple Rain: As the sun dips below the horizon, the skies will open not with water, but with an evening of pure celebration! Purple Rain is a carnival of joy, featuring live performances from renowned artists, sensational music concerts, breathtaking dance performances, and uproarious stand-up comedy shows. It’s a reminder that joy knows no bounds and entertainment is for everyone.

It’s a testament to human ingenuity and the boundless creativity that thrives when given a platform.
Purple Sports: Witness the indomitable spirit of athletes at Purple Sports. This arena will host extraordinary talent in adaptive sports events such as Blind Football, Special Olympics, Para Olympics, and the Asian Blind Chess Championship. It’s here that the sheer power of human will is on full display, a powerful reminder that “It’s not about what you’ve lost, but what you have left.”
And, of course, a highlight will be the opportunity to meet the Purple Ambassadors, individuals whose indomitable spirit and inspiring journeys will undoubtedly enlighten and motivate all who encounter them.
Disability: A Human Tapestry
It’s a stark reality that disability is an intrinsic part of the human experience. An estimated 1.3 billion people – approximately 16% of the global population – currently experience significant disability. This number is on an upward trajectory, influenced by global population ageing and the increasing prevalence of noncommunicable diseases.
Disability, in its essence, isn’t solely a health condition. It’s the intricate dance between individuals with conditions like cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or depression, and the personal and environmental factors that shape their lives. Negative attitudes, inaccessible transportation and public buildings, and limited social support often create formidable barriers.
Consider the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, a man who navigated life with polio: “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” His life was a living testament to overcoming physical challenges through mental fortitude. Or think of Stephen Hawking, whose brilliant mind soared beyond the confines of a debilitating disease, profoundly changing our understanding of the universe. Their lives scream in unison: there is no barrier…it’s only in the mind.
The Unstoppable Spirit: Lessons from the Paralympics
The Indian athletes at the Paralympics are a beacon of this unwavering spirit. Their performances are not just about winning medals; they are about shattering stereotypes, redefining what’s possible, and inspiring millions. Each dive, each sprint, each shot is a testament to years of dedication, perseverance, and an unshakeable belief in their own abilities. Their triumphs echo the truth that “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
Changing the Narrative: A Barrier-Free Future
The Purple Fest isn’t just about celebrating; it’s about enacting change. It’s a clarion call for us to fundamentally shift our mindset. We must move beyond viewing accessibility as a concession and instead embrace it as a fundamental human right, a cornerstone of an equitable society. A barrier-free environment shouldn’t be an aspiration; it should be a way of life. This requires not just ramps and accessible toilets, but a profound transformation in our attitudes, our language, and our understanding.
The ‘Forgotten’ Purple
WITH one new case of dementia every three seconds, this is one disability that we cannot afford to forget in the Purple Fest. However, as we celebrate this incredible initiative, a shadow of regret lingers for me. Despite observing Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, whose theme colour is, significantly, purple, we do not have a person living with dementia as one of our esteemed Purple Ambassadors.
Dementia is one of the major disabilities.
Dementia, a condition affecting millions globally, brings its own unique set of challenges and experiences, and including their voice would have profoundly enriched the discourse on inclusion. Their perspective, often overlooked, is crucial in building a truly comprehensive understanding of accessibility and support. It’s a reminder that the journey towards true inclusion is ongoing, and there are always more voices to uplift and acknowledge.
Goa Going Purple for Inclusion
IN HUES of royal, a spirit takes flight. For inclusion’s embrace, shining ever so bright. No longer to mourn, but to celebrate cheer, Different we are, let our abilities appear.
A barrier-free world, a mind truly new, Changing our gaze, me and also you. Closer we come, hand-in-hand, heart-to-heart. In this vibrant purple, we all play a part.
Conclusion: Embracing Our Shared Humanity
THE Goa International Purple Fest 2025 is more than an event; it’s a movement. It’s an invitation to see beyond perceived limitations, to recognize the extraordinary abilities within every individual, and to collectively build a world where “The measure of a man is not how much he suffers, but how much he is able to endure and still remain strong.” Let us carry the vibrant spirit of purple in our hearts, reminding ourselves that true progress lies in embracing our shared humanity, celebrating our differences, and ensuring that every single person has the opportunity to thrive.
