Has the once idyllic coastal State added the suffix sex to its slogan sun, sand, and sea? The sexual tone of ‘Tales of Kamasutra & Christmas Celebration,’ uncovered recently, tells a grim story of how commercial sexual activities are thriving in Goa

By Praveena Sharma

On November 21 (Friday), when Arunendra Kumar Pandey, founder of Anyay Rahit Zindagi (ARZ) – which translates to Life Without injustice in English – took a call from a retired judge of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA) court in Mumbai, he did not know it would send many worlds into a tizzy.
Her frantic voice at the other end of the phone told him that an ardent disciple – Arti Razdan – of the late Godman Osho Rajneesh was offended with a poster (See picture), promoting paid sexual activities in Goa, circulating in closed circles of hedonists. She feared it could be linked to sex trafficking, and asked him to probe deeper.
On going through its contents, he found the poster was littered with words like ‘Yoni Massage’, ‘Lingam Massage’, ‘Cosmic Orgasm’, ‘Tantric Love’, ‘Mystery of Masturbation’, ‘Mystery of Tantric Ejaculations’, ‘Tantra Blind Touch Dance’ and other such sexually explicit terms.
The ad also claimed the four-day event – from December 25 to December 28 – was being organised by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh Foundation and facilitated by Swami Dhyan Sumit, founder of Osho Ludhiana Meditation Society.
Pandey concluded it had to do with commercial sexual activities as it even mentioned a contribution of Rs24,999 per person. By this time, it was late night. Nonethless, he decided to inform the crime branch about the ad.
“In the night itself, I wrote a letter to SP (superintendent of police) Crime Branch and sent copies to the DGP (director general of police) and IGP (inspector general of police),” narrated the social activist, who has rescued many girls and women from sex traffickers in Goa.
Next day (Saturday), he was informed by the police the event had been cancelled. He conveyed the message to the former judge in Mumbai. Within hours, she called back saying it was still on. Instantly, Pandey got in touch with an Australia-based journalist Franky Fernandes and asked him to find out what was happening. And sure enough, as the judge had informed, the event had not been cancelled.
After Fernandes spoke to the media, all hell broke loose. There was an avalanche of public outcry. By now, the Catholic Association of Goa (CAG) had also got a whiff of how it was being promoted as a Christmas celebration event with its poster screaming ‘Tales of Kamasutra & Christmas Celebration’. Goa Women’s Forum (GWF) also entered fray voicing concern over rising “sex tourism” in Goa.
By Sunday, the police were flooded with complaints – one from even the Muslim organisation Jamaat-e-Islam. This drove them into an overdrive to file an FIR against the organisers based on the complaint filed by CAG – which focussed more on hurting religious sentiments than on commercial sex offences. This forced the organisers to announce the cancellation of the event.
Sumit of Osho Ludhiana Meditation Society told Goan Observer they have “apologised to the media” for their “mistake” and “pulled out.”
“There was a mistake with addition of some unnecessary quotes in that poster. It’s our ignorance and our mistake, and (so) we take (back) this poster and apologise to the media. We have cancelled that (the event) and pulled out,” he responded after being persistently prodded.
But even as the curtain rings down on one of the chapters of Goa’s Tales of Kamasutra – some believe sexual activities will take place, only not under the pretext of Christmas – many questions are buzzing in the minds of Goa’s people.
Foremost among them is; why did the police take so long to act on a serious crime even after enough evidence was provided?
Cyril Aleixo Fernandes, president of CAG, doesn’t blink his eyelids when he explains; “it (sex tourism) is happening with strong connivance of the State government and the bureaucracy. They are very much aware this (events like ‘Tales of Kamasutra’) is happening but they are showing Nelson’s eye to it. That is how it has reached this level, where even religion is being is marketed. This event is all about sex marketing.”
He said the mention of ‘Christman Celebration’ in the ad was not incidental, the organisation would not have hesitated to use festivals of Ganesha or Diwali as a bait to hook victims.
What has alarmed many is the brazenness of the organisers. Sabina Martins of Bailancho Saad – a women’s rights body – said such activities were being held “in hiding” or “under wraps” earlier but they are now being openly conducted due to the patronage of influential people.
“Earlier, it (sex trade or commerce) used to be under wraps but now they are so emboldened that they are brazen about it. In past, when we used to protest the casinos, women were not shown on their ads. Today, every single ad of theirs has women”.
In the recent years, Martins has seen Goa increasingly becoming a thriving centre of sex tourism, which is operated by people from outside. Most call girls solicitated for it are from other States.
“Women are brought from other States on pretext of work and then forced to go with men. We have worked with women infected with HIV due to sex tourism,” she shared. CAG’s Fernandes said a naturally beautiful State like Goa did not need sex tourism to promote itself.
“We have always been one of the top tourist destinations. We shouldn’t stoop so low. What is happening is the government’s moral position has become low. We used to have good policymakers, and good political representative earlier. Today, our political representatives are compromising morality and encouraging such activities,” he said.
Fernandes questioned why the chief minister or any other ministers had not commented on the issue till now; “this proves they are aware of it and they support such activities.” He pointed the malleability of the State police was visible in them “merely requesting the organisers to bring down the advertisement instead of taking strong action against them”.
“Their (police) job is to stop (the crime). They are not supposed to request. These (organisers of illegal sexual activities) people are not our guest. They are criminals who have entered Goa and are promoting such activity,” said an enraged Fernandes.
The complaint filed by CAG with the DGP calls for charges to be framed under section 299 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (deliberate and malicious acts to outrage religious feelings), section 302 BNS (uttering words with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings), section 294 BNS (sale and dissemination of obscene material), section 296 BNS (obscene acts in public places) and section 75 BNS (sexual harassment and solicitation).
In the case of ‘Tales of Kamasutra’, which pushed Tantra activities, there was also the angle of godmen – past and current – being used to operate sex scam.
Arti Razdan, follower of Osho, psychologist, Tarod reader and the one who brought the ad to the notice of ex judge, criticised the propagation of “obscene, vulgar and perverted” activities in the name of Osho.
“This is nothing but misuse of Osho’s name, his work and legacy. I am a psychologist and meditation facilitator and this is not how workshops are done in the world of Osho,” she told Goan Observer.
Razdan said Osho had himself spoken on why Tantra had “failed” and saw it as “exploitation of sex”.
“The issue we want to raise is why the Osho International Foundation (Osho’s headquarter in Pune) spokeswoman Ma Amrit Sadhna is silent on the matter? Why have they taken no steps to protect Osho’s name and legacy? As Sannyassins, we condemn this advertisement and stand in solidarity with the people of Goa,” she said.
According to her, there were many cases filed against Sumit in Ludhiana; “and he has the gall, even after all this, to say that he will organise more camps with more enforcement. We request Goa police to take stringent action against him”.
After he was exposed, he unabashedly wrote to his followers in a whatapp group message: “Aab hum hamsha hi news mein rehnge (Now, we will perennially be in news). Time aa agaya hai (Time has come). This event is created by Bhagwan (Osho) to teach me and make me ready for (a) bigger job. I assure u all, 2026 will be bigger than 2025. Our mistake was to attach Christmas celebration with this event out of our ignorance. But we will come back with more enforcement and (in) more organised manner”.
Razdan said the next camp will be held in Jaisalmer between December 18 and December 21, and called on the authorities to stop it. She accused Sumit of misusing Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh Foundation’s name to create personal wealth for himself.
“He was using Bhagwan Shree (Rajneesh) Foundation’s name but he was collecting money, through scan, into his private account. What does that show? That his foundation did not have an account number or that he was using foundation name but earning privately,” she said.
CAG’s Fernandes also does not want Sumit to be let off with just an apology and urged the police to thoroughly investigate his crimes and book him under relevant sections. He even suspected abuse of children as they are seen in some pictures posted by the organisers on their social media accounts.
Pandey of ARZ also pushed for a deeper investigation into the case. He said usually once such information is made available to authorities, they send a decoy to bust the racket.
“I think, the police could have adopted the same modus operandi but they (police) felt hurting religious sentiments made a much stronger case,” he said.
Razdan informed while they were “digging into matter”, one of her friends posed as an interested customer and called on the mobile number in the ad; “Some Manjit picks the phone and he didn’t ask her whether she had ever meditated or what was her experience in meditation? He just tells her, ‘you want discount’; ‘I will give you discount of Rs5,000’. She said she was single. So, he told her Guruji (Sumit) will check your energy and a person will be made available to you. This is how shocking and devious this whole this was. It was happening under the guise of Tantra camp and misuse of Osho’s name”.
Osho Ludhiana Meditation Centre has organised many Tantra camps in the past and many more are in the pipeline. Razdan shared that the outcry in Goa did not deter him from heading to Thailand for a Tantra Festival (November24-30) taking place currently in Phuket and Pattaya. The next one is in Jaisalmer between December 18 and December 21.
Goa held out for the illegal event to be withdrawn. But has that, in any way, paved the path for checking the rapid sex tourism growth in the State?
Pandey does not think so. He said commercial sexual activities have surged post Covid, not only Goa but across the globe.
“After covid, the vulnerability of the girls has increased. Cases related to sexual crimes are not being given priority by the law enforcement agencies. Policies being drafted that contribute to commercial sexual activity. Whether it is casinos or cross-gender massage or cheap liquor – all these are the making women and children vulnerable. A whole ecosystem is being created for commercial sex,” he complained.
Australian journalist Fernandes also alluded to “unmistakable surge in sex tourism”.
“Last year, a senior Hindu high priest—publicly aligned with the ruling BJP—likened the Calangute–Baga stretch to the “Thailand of Goa,” a remark that underscored the growing perception of the area as a hub for unchecked commercialisation of sex,” he told Goan Observer.
He said writing has been on the walls for some time now. Notably, vigilant citizens have often managed to stymie entry of sex tourism from the backdoor. One such instance was of Playboy Club’s plan to enter in North Goa, which got shelved after a huge public outcry.
“However, despite repeated alerts, the problem has evolved rather than diminished,” he lamented.
Fernandes attributed increase in sex tourism to “unregulated social media platforms, which now served as the primary engine driving sex tourism in the State”.
“Goa’s increasingly sexualised image stands in stark contrast against its heritage of culture, spirituality, and community life. Without urgent intervention and meaningful regulation, stakeholders warn that the State risks further entrenching a reputation it neither seeks nor deserves,” he warned.

BEWARE OF FAKE OSHO RAJNEESH SUCCESSORS
One such imposter is the self-styled spiritual or lifestyle guru Ozen Rajneesh, who is supposed to have conducted several “Kamasutra Tales” and ‘Tantra Nights’ between 2014 and 2023 in the Vagator–Anjuna–Morjim–Arambol belt of Goa.
He has donned many identities for the frequent pop-up retreats organised by him – “Mystic Ozen,” “Ozen R,” “Ozen World Experience” and so on. Many disciples of Osho Rajneesh debunk his claims of being connected to Pune’s Osho Ashram.
Information garnered through various sources reveal these events were held in boutique villas, private party spaces, Airbnb villas, co-working “creative hubs” and wellness and massage spas.
Since there is no permanent address, he is able to easily dodge enforcement agencies and remain in the shadows.
There has been a surge in “tantric healing and ecstatic dance parties” post COVID, but they have stayed off the radar because tourism police, generally, look for illegal massage and prostitution, not “tantra workshops.”
These retreats invariably function as centres for “energy awakening”, “intimacy meditation,” “couple connection,” “mystical dance night” and other such activities.
He is said to run floating “OZEN retreats” in Goa, Himachal (Dharmkot or Bir), Lonavala, Bali, Nepal, and Thailand.
