KONKANI FILM FEST BY ESG!By GO Team
Aug 16- Aug 22, 2025, GSFF 2025 August 15, 2025THE Goa State film festival which kicked off on Thursday, August 14 is a celebration of Konkani cinema. The first Konkani films were made even before Liberation. Among the first Konkani films to be made was “Mogacho Aundoo” way back in 1950. Widely considered the first publicly released Konkani film it was produced and directed by Jerry Braganza, it was released on April 24, 1950. It is a melodramatic love story featuring the producer Jerry Braganza with Irin Amaran and Leena Fernandes.
Among the other early Konkani films are “Amchem Noxib” made soon after Liberation, in 1963. It was directed by Frank Fernand and is remembered for songs like “Molbaio dou” and “Don kalizam” which are still sung at Goan weddings. This is followed by “Nirmon” directed by A Salam and inspired by Tennyson’s “Enoch Arden.” It starred C Alvaris, Shalini Mardolkar and Ophelia and won two national awards for the best actor.
There is a long gap but in 1977, the first Konkani colour film was made, “Buierantlo Munis” produced by Tony Coutinho and the legendary musician Chris Perry. It was inspired by the historic “The Count of Monte Cristo.” The novel is claimed to be based on the Goan priest Abba Faria who is considered the father of hypnotism. There is a statue in him near the Adil Shah Palace in Panjim. This is the first Konkani film for which the music was by Asha Bhosle.
There was a revival of Konkani films after Goa became the venue for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Among the films that were produced following Goa becoming the permanent venue for IFFI was “Payann.” A film produced in Mangalore is expected to be released by September 2025. “Anthyarambha” is a philosophically inclined film and is scheduled to be released in September 2025. The film poster was unveiled in late 2024.
The film “Saavat” directed by Shivram Harmalkar and Santosh Shetkar featured in the panorama section of IFFI in 2024. Among the recent releases are “Lucky Draw 777” directed by Rayan Magnato and it made its international debut in Canada. “Anthyarambha” directed by Ramesh Kamat, “Vodthanthlem Ful” a family oriented film directed by Melwin Elpel on the struggle of children at home and school were produced in 2024. Among the blockbusters are “Aleesha”, “O Maria” and the “Nachom-ia-Kumpasar” which has earned acclaim and awards. The Konkani film industry did not find encouragement as the subsidies for Konkani films were withdrawn in 2023.
But the ongoing Goa State Film Festival is showcasing as many as 19 feature films. The films in the competitive section include “Questaio de Confusao,” “Miranda House,” “Kaajro,” “7 Days,” “Juze,” “Amori”(Dusk), “Chopadi,” “Glory,” “Mopa Diary,” “Amizade,” “Bade Abbu,” “D’Costa House,” “Pedru Poder,” “Ransaavat,” “Fotting No. 1,” “Gang,” “Tem” (Battle of Egos), “Crazy Mogi” and “Mog”
