IRONMAN CELEBRATES THE SPIRIT OF FITNESS
Uncategorized November 14, 2025By Jonathan Jorge
THE Ironman 70.3 is a celebration of true athletic spirit and boasts of being one of the toughest endurance sports events in the country. As a physiotherapist keen on fitness and an active runner, the triathlon was a delight to follow. Ironman took place at the Miramar beach of capital city Panjim on November 9th, 2025.
The three competition segments saw quite a diversity in participation with 1,300 participants registering from 31 countries. The triathlon included a 1.9km swim off the riverine sea of Miramar beach, which was followed by a 90km bike ride along the scenic Zuari river and finally a 21km run to the Goa Raj Bhavan at Dona Paula and back. The event was flagged off by Chief Minister of Goa Dr Pramod Sawant who is keen to make Goa into a sporting events destination.
Ironman is undoubtedly one of the most challenging endurance triathlons which puts physical and mental toughness to the test. Those who participate in it have to put in the hard work of training with the help of a team and this involves different professionals from exercise scientists, physiotherapists, nutritionists, etc, to eventually mould the ultimate all round “ironman.”
GOA IS SCENIC!
WHILE the event this year was as gruelling as usual it is a fact that the scenic coastline of Goa invites a little bit of “susegad” spirit into the marathon. In the individual category, Konstantin Belousov of Uzbekistan and Ellie Garrett of Great Britain bagged the first place in male and female categories respectively. In the relay category, the Indian air force team did a clean sweep by conquering all three podium spots. Amongst the participants were BJP leaders Tejasvi Surya and K Annamalai who completed the race within record time.
The large number of participants testifies to the new wave of fitness which is catching up the country across generations ranging from kids category to youth to seniors – in fact, for Ironman age is just a number and little else if one may say so. Put in the discipline required in training and participate and maybe you’ll be an Ironman champion one day! Some participants just stay fit into their senior years by participating in the event year after year across the world and become Ironman veterans with some colourful stories to recount. Providing one finds them and gets talking to them.

“Can I take on the Ironman 70.3?”
WHILE the 70.3 mile distance of the race can seem extremely daunting, it is definitely achievable. A couch potato can transform into Ironman with enough dedication and grit.
Things to keep in mind before taking up the race — your current fitness level, medical history, past injuries and most importantly the time you are able to dedicate for practice, are factors that will influence your preparation.
A proper medical/physical examination can help in identifying red flags and areas that need to be addressed.
“Consistency is key” applies here. Your ability to perform at the race is a sum total of consistent practice efforts and isn’t affected merely by the intensity of your training. Choose a program that will start according to your fitness level and help you build up until you’re race ready. Tailor made program are perfect to give more structure to your training.
Apart from the physical work, what you fuel your body with plays a huge role in your prep. The increase in intensity of your activity levels as you progress will be proportional to the type and amount of fuel your body needs to recover. Mindful eating habits and structured diets help in giving your body the right amount of nutrition required to be race ready.
Proper recovery is just as important, if not the most important.
Rest periods are mandatory to prevent the near occasion of an injury. Injuries are common during preparation and can set you back. However, it is part of the process and shouldn’t de-motivate you. Regular physiotherapy consultations can help you keep your body on track and get you back to your race potential in the daunting presence of injury. Emphasis should be on “prehab.” Recovery aids can help with the process but aren’t mandatory.
All things aside, the finances you will have to delegate towards the race is noteworthy (reportedly registration for participating in the Ironman triathlon is a whopping Rs40,000 for the Individual category). From registration to acquiring good race gear, training and medical expenses, the race can come off as a pinch to the pocket for regular middle class people.
Maybe efforts from the government could also be directed towards bringing more budget-friendly endurance races to the state, this will help motivate local talent to get engaged with such professionally and internationally organized endurance sporting events such as Ironman.
To end things, yes you can definitely take on the race. With great resilience and will power as prerequisites!
