Excerpted from ‘Dopamine Trap’ by Prasenjeet Dhage…. How Cultures Have Suppressed Sex

Indian families and by extension, society, has become proficient in dismissal and living in the shadow of denial especially when it comes to those important conversations about sex. In an online survey by Team Dopamine Trap, we found that 67% of applicants’ family did not discuss the bodily changes that they went through during puberty.
It is often for societies and families to come to terms with the fact that their girls are sexually active after a certain age and are free to make their own decisions. Despite living in the modern time our generation continues to face the brunt of long-entrenched stigmas and social taboos associated with topics like sex which has, in turn, led to a complete breakdown in communication, especially at home with our families.
Sex was not taboo at all in ancient India if truth were to be told, ancient society was very liberal towards the discussion of sex and the human body. Some of the things mentioned in Kamasutra which was written between 400 BCE and 300 CE would be outrageous to many even by today’s liberal standards. Most people believe Kamasutra is about different sex positions but there is more to it than meets the eye. For instance, sex positions are forbidden if women are down with a fever, pregnant, extremely corpulent, lately delivered or deformed . Use of any position in these cases is forbidden because of the possibility of very bad after-effects. Vatsyayana also mentions homosexual women who indulge in sexual practices with the help of artificial aids. Kamastura talks about not only how to begin sex but also gives systematic end. According to Sutras 13-22: after sex, the gratified lovers need to wash and have plenty of water. This will be followed by the consumption of mixed vegetables, juices, citron, meat and mutton soup. Sex makes people lose bodily fluids, the average women burn 70 calories while men burn 100 calories, this could be more if you have read about different positions in Kamasutra and/or your partners’ atheleticism. Hence, eating good food will help your body revitalize better.
