MIGRATION IS AN INSTINCT!

MIGRATION is a global phenomenon that has existed since time immemorial. Human beings move from one part of a country to another or from one part of the world to another. This happens for a variety of reasons. The most important reasons are undoubtedly a quest for a better economic future and increased safety coupled with the peace of mind brought about by the adherence to the rule of law.
Just like humans, birds and animals too migrate regularly every year, whether in keeping with the changing weather patterns or in search of better pastures.
People across the world keep migrating to a different country. This is a matter of personal choice and could be happening for a variety of reasons. The most important reasons are undoubtedly their quest to provide a better future for them economically and with increased safety coupled with the peace of mind brought about by the adherence to the rule of law.
To uproot oneself and to restart life in a foreign land is no mean feat and requires a great deal of soul searching, thought, purpose and planning. Perhaps those that opt to take such a far-reaching move, are forced to do so as they do not see the light at the end of their tunnel. Migrating elsewhere may give them the chance to escape the red tape, bureaucracy, stagnation and corruption that they encounter and to fully utilise their skills and experience in their new chosen land.
Many have been migrating over the decades for similar reasons and have largely managed to carve a reasonable living with varied success and have not looked back. May those who take this action succeed in their brave endeavours and as most do always keep their land of birth ever so close to their heart!

FAREWELL, PEOPLE’S GOVERNOR!
PS SREEDHARAN PILLAI had assumed office as Goa’s governor on July 15, 2021 and laid it down on July 25, 2025, after having completed his term. It helped that as the governor and CM being from the ruling party, the past four years were politically uneventful and no run-in with the government. Let us forget the aberrations that occurred during one of his predecessor’s term, though he too was from the ruling party.
Ex-governor Pillai was people-centric, affable, accessible and kept the Raj Bhavan open for all. During his tenure he travelled across Goa, especially the hinterland, and interacted with people of all cadres to understand their concerns and grievances. During his tour of 400 villages, he visited temples, churches and mosques and donated generously to these places, for social causes and to those suffering from cancer and kidney disease. Governor Pillai encouraged and initiated many welfare measures – social, rural and cultural.
Being an erudite person, he authored more than 200 books. During his stay here, he wrote poems about the islands and heritage trees of Goa. Importantly, under his stewardship, the Goa University rose from B++ to A+ Grade, a first, since its inception on 1 June, 1985.
He remained humble in his behaviour, simple in his mannerism and dress (mostly wore a white lungi) and an easy way of speaking. He has no airs around him. Even his departure on July 25 was a simple affair for he travelled with his wife by train to his hometown Kannur in Kerala. He could have had a last hurray and splurged on a special plane (as per his entitlement) but did not.
The above qualities show the true mark of a statesman who rose above politics and gained the admiration and respect of citizens and politicians. Wish that other politicians take a leaf out of his book.
—Sridhar D Iyer, Caranzalem
