ESG SPENT RS29 CR ON IFFI

Aug 09-Aug 15, 2025, WEEKEND UPDATES

THE ESG is reported to have spent Rs11.4 crore towards events which included Rs10.2 crore for the design and fabrication of  boards and interior décor. ESG also spent over Rs5 crore on technical expenses, most of it was given to an agency for setting up infrastructure for open air screening, installation of digital cinema projectors, renting of security equipment like bad scanners and upgrading the public address system at the Marquiniz Palace. ESG also spent Rs1 crore on advertisements and media plans. Incidentally, the ESG is yet to pay media houses for the advertising released for IFFI 2024.

REVERSE FANATICISM!

ACCORDING to a Whatsapp posting Dimple Yadav, the wife of former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, went to a mosque wearing a saree. The maulana reportedly strongly objected, even calling her naked. Apparently, only women wearing burqa are considered decent by the maulana. Islam may consider women equal, but the maulana do not allow women in burqa or saree to enter the mosque. Islam is the only religion that treat women as second-class human beings. The Prophet himself did not discriminate against women. The burqa and hijab probably came into practice to protect women during the many wars that the Prophet Mohammad had to fight before Islam was established.

POPULAR HEALTH ADVICE

FACEBOOK and even prestigious print media like the “Times of India” are packed with articles to do with health issues with reams and reams of information on various diseases and ailments afflicting human beings.  In fact, TOI has regular health pages which are actually a promotion for hospitals doctors and pharma companies. The TOI edition dated August 6, 2025 for instance has a article on chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This is nothing to do with the “goddess of love” Venus but about poor blood supply to veins running down the legs and feet. While the major arteries carry oxygen rich blood pumped from the heart all over the body including its extremities, it is the venous system which carries back blood to the heart via the lungs for oxygenation and re-pumping around the body anew.

Severe venous insufficiency occurs when valves in the legs malfunction and instead of opening onwards they turn backward towards the feet. This condition has become famous as USA’S President Donald Trump has admitted to suffering from venous insufficiency. People who live for long years stationary in a chair before their computers or standing for long hours and even pregnant women tend to develop CVI. The damage can be minimized by moving more instead of sitting down for hours.

Sufferers of CVI are advised to use a pillow to raise their legs above the heart level for 30  minutes of more thrice a day to reduce pressure in the leg veins. You are also advised to walk every time you get a cramp to relax the calf muscle to help the veins pump back blood to the heart. You may also do exercises to do with flexing the ankles, pointing toes towards and downwards and doing ankle circles 10 to 15 times in both clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. Good-luck.

DHOKLA V/S IDLIS

THE nutritional advice in a recent “Times of India” issue is likely to spark a war between Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The paper carries a comparison between the nutritional value of the south Indian idli to the Gujarati dhokla. According to the chart provided by the TOI every 100g of idli contains only 128 calories as compared to 160-200g in the case of the dhokla. The amount of protein however is more or less on par at about six grams. The fat content is claimed to be higher in idli. The carbs are also more or less equal at 25 grams. Idli is reported to have higher fiber than dhokla. What is common to both dishes is that they are steamed and not fried or baked. South Indian will of course insist that idli is healthier because it is fermented steamed food and therefore good for the gut.

NOSE WEARABLE

THE market is full of wearable monitoring devices which tells you the status of various bodily parts. Apparently, the latest wearable device is the nose wearable. This wearable sensor developed by a graduate student at an institute of science in Israel, claims to identify body mass index. It also claims to monitor anxiety, depression levels and links to autism. The wearable nose sensor is fitted on the upper back of the individual with tubes running around to capture the airflow out of each nostril of the nose. Maybe we are heading for a smart nose in addition to smart hand watch surveillance of the body.

TRUMP TURNS NASTY

INDIA apparently is paying a heavy price for the loving back patting and hugging friendship between Narendra Modi and Donald Trump. It may be recalled that on several occasions Trump has called Modi his good friend. But Trump wants his good friends to obey him if they want to continue to remain in his good books. Trump is very upset with Modi for buying petroleum and defense equipment from Russia. The United States has decided to impose very stiff export duties on semiconductors and pharma products from India. Already the export duty on Apple phones manufactured in India attract over 35% duty. This despite the fact that Americans are the biggest victims as most of the Iphones are made in India but  sold in the United States.

SATYAPAL MALIK NO MORE

FORMER governor of Goa Satyapal Malik died after a prolonged illness in a Delhi hospital at the age of 79 years.  Malik, who also served as governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar and Meghalaya, had become a strong critic of the BJP government. He was the last governor of J&K before Article 370 was revoked on August 15, 2019. Satyapal hit out at the BJP government over the Pulwama attack and unfriendly farm laws. Satyapal was harassed by Home Minister Amit Shah and an arrest warrant was served against him when he was lying sick in the hospital.

 RESERVATION FOR TRIBALS

THE Lok Sabha has passed a bill to provide reservation of seats for the Kunbi, Velip, Gaudi, Dhangar communities in the Goa state assembly. The tribals account for over 12% of the population of Goa. They are in absolute numbers. Disturbingly. while the total population has increased as per the 2011 census by 8.8% the tribal population has decreased by 9%. It is likely that four seats will be reserved for the tribals in the next elections.  This could help the BJP as the BJP  president in the state  Damu Naik belongs to the tribal community.

BEEF SHORTAGE IN GOA

GOA is going through an acute shortage of beef since the supply has dropped by 85%. Goa is primarily dependent on Karnataka and Maharashtra for the supply of all meat products including beef. As against the requirement of around 30 tons a day the supply is less than three tons. The state slaughterhouse is also affected because it depends on animals brought from outside. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant however claims that the shortage is due to a strike by the beef traders in Karnataka. The beef traders in Karnataka are reportedly harassed by the Ram Sene and other fundamental groups.

BIHAR- ASSAM LACK EMPLOYMENT

THE largest number of migrants to other parts of the country are out of Bihar and Assam. It is primarily because  employment opportunities are much higher in states like Haryana, Kerala and Maharashtra which have the highest per capita income. It’s an irony that young people from states like Kerala and Goa migrate to the Gulf countries for better earnings, while their place is taken over by Bihari and Bhaiya from Uttar Pradesh. More and more people from rural areas are also moving to urban areas like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Migrants forced down wages as unlike the locals, they are willing to accept lower wages and longer working hours. This is because of the need for migrant labor from Bihar or even Karnataka who can earn three to four times higher wages than in their home state. Migration will always be a problem as long as there is inequality between various states.

KHAREWADA BEACH RESTORATION

Reinforcing the commitment made on the floor of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Tourism Minister  Rohan A Khaunte has initiated efforts for the revival and promotion of Kharewada beach as a tourism destination. On Saturday, August 2 the minister visited the site along with Vasco MLA Krishna Daji Salkar, Director of Tourism  Kedar Naik, councillor Shami Salkar and departmental officials and reviewed the current state of the beach to discuss a comprehensive development strategy. The site inspection was carried out within a week of the assurance made in the assembly.

The team took stock of the accumulated waste, infrastructural challenges, and environmental concerns currently affecting the area. Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte stated, “Last year, MLA Krishna Daji Salkar had raised concerns about Kharewada beach cleanliness, and we ensured that these were addressed by including them in the scope of our beach cleaning operations. While taking the local fishing community — niz Goenkars — into confidence, we have highlighted the importance of making them more responsible and aware, so that our pristine beaches remain clean and well-maintained. Tourism is a key contributor to the economy and creates additional livelihood opportunities for locals.”

The Department of Tourism is working on a phased and sustainable approach for the development of Kharewada beach. The focus will be on restoring the beach’s natural character while simultaneously creating opportunities for local employment through tourism-linked activities. Plans include addressing essential civic issues such as sewage and solid waste management in coordination with relevant authorities.

A detailed action plan will be prepared in consultation with local stakeholders (fishing community), ensuring that community involvement remains central to the process. The restored beach is expected to serve not only as a recreational space but also as a community gathering point during festivals and local events. This initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision to promote regenerative and community-driven tourism, aimed at inclusive growth and responsible destination development.
