GAUTAM GOT RS 51,000 FOR ABUSING GOENCHO SAIB

GAUTAM GOT RS 51,000 FOR ABUSING GOENCHO SAIB

April 25- May 01, 2026, Stray Thoughts

AND a few stray thoughts for yet another Saturday. For a Saturday following the week when the police revealed that Gautam Khattar was paid Rs51,000 plus air fare and accommodation for his toxic appearance at the Parshuram Jayanti celebrations in Vasco da Gama. For a Saturday following the week when on the mega Goan property expo or exhibition in the national capital region of New Delhi. For a Saturday following the week when on our discovery thanks to Harshada Thakkar, who has traced the course of the river Sal down south Goa from its origins near the Mahalsa temple in Verna to Mobor and Causalim where it enters into the Arabian sea. For a Saturday following the week when on the coaching class mania which has overtaken Goa also. For a Saturday following the week when on the new Deltin casino vessel.
AND a few stray thoughts on when the police revealed that Gautam Khattar was paid Rs51,000 plus air fare and accommodation for his toxic appearance at the Parshuram Jayanti celebrations in Vasco da Gama. Apparently, it was Gautam’s brother Mahadev who is the mastermind behind the abuse of St Francis Xavier.
Gautam Khattar not only called St Francis Xavier an “atankvadi” meaning terrorist but also made several nasty comments about “the sacred relics.” The police have also revealed that the actual speech was written by brother Mahadev, who is Gautam’s manager. It is Mahadev who wrote the script, videographed Gautam’s hate speech and posted it on UTube.
Ironically, both brothers are residents of the holy city of Haridwar. The Goa Police claim to have managed to drag Mahadev and have arrested him for his role in the video. Apparently, the Khattar brothers are habitual hate-mongers against minorities. One of the Instagram videos exposed by Masaba Kadri shows Gautam hurling abuse at Muslim community in a high octane speech which tells Muslims that they will not go to janaat heaven but to narak hell.
Gautam also says in his video on Instagram that he started looking for the Xavier after whom several educational institutions are named. He had thought that the inspiration for these educational institutions would be a maha purush. Instead, he found what was left of Xavier was a worm-infested body and some bones.
The historical reality is that the body of St Francis Xavier remained incorrupt for almost four decades and there are medical records to prove the point. For more details on St Francis Xavier and the history of the exposition you may refer to “Goencho Saib” by Rajan Narayan.

GOA PROPERTY EXPO
AND a few stray thoughts on the mega Goan property expo or exhibition in the national capital region of New Delhi. Facebook promotions of the expo due for the last week of May show a crane lifting Goan deluxe towers from Dona Paula and Assagao to Gurgaon for the property expo. So much so that Delhiwallahs do not have to come to Goa to buy property in Goa. Property in Goa is being delivered to the Delhites by property developers from Goa.
This is a homecoming of sorts because the biggest promoters and developers of property in Goa are the DLF Group which built the Gurgaon City. But there is also a lesson to be learnt from the DLF conquest of Gurgaon. DLF also as in the case of Goa violated the building height restrictions. DLF is reported to have built eight additional floors to a 20 floor plus skyscraper in Gurgaon.
Under Supreme Court orders DLF had to demolish the top eight floors. DLF had announced a project selling up market villas located in the hills of Reis Magos in Goa, the project has been stalled because of local objections to the hill cutting. Goa property expositions have also been announced in Bengaluru and Mumbai. Presumably, a lot of those who bought property in Dubai may want to scout Goa as an alternate location for another home.

UPDATING RIVER SAL IN GOA
AND a few stray thoughts on our discovery thanks to Harshada Thakkar, who has traced the course of the river Sal down south Goa from its origins near the Mahalsa temple in Verna to Mobor and Causalim where it enters into the Arabian sea. We never realized this while spending quality time at the riverfront The Leela Resort, now St Regis Resort, at Cavellossim beach. Indeed, most of the 5-star properties in south Goa are concentrated on the river Sal and this includes the Taj Exotica in Benaulim, the Marriott Fairfield Marriott in Benaulim, the Dona Sylvia and Raddisson in Cavellosim, as well as the Novotel and the Old Anchor properties amongst many other properties in this Sal river belt.
The point is this convergence of the Sal river with the sea is a favorite hunting grounds of the hotel chains. Mega resort hotels pose a much greater threat of pollution because of the huge amounts of waste they generate, though there have been whispers there have been no concrete study of the extent of the disturbance of the delicate ecology of the Sal river. The river which is a tourist attraction may unwittingly be done to death by an overdose of tourism. But apparently the Cutbona jetty and the Khareband area of Madgaon are amongst the most polluted areas of the Sal river. Some narratives talk of the Sal river being polluted at source as it begins near the Verna Industrial Estate. You may read the story of the Sal river in our cover story by Harshada Thakkar in this issue.
This forms part of architect Harshada Thakkar’s doctorate thesis mapping the river Sal for pollutants. We are so obsessed with the river Mandovi and its casinos that we have not monitored the degradation of the river Sal, and the other rivers of Goa. Incidentally, Manohar Parrikar remarked over a decade ago that if anyone falls into a Goan river he will die of pollution.

COACHING CLASS MANIA
AND a few stray thoughts on the coaching class mania which has overtaken Goa also. Every time the results of the joint entrance exam to the IIT is declared there are huge advertisements in the Goa newspapers claiming that the toppers are all students of one coaching class or another. The daily papers and particularly “The Times of India” has a two page advertisement by Narayana Coaching Class, claiming that the eight state toppers and seven students who scored 100% marks in the IIT entrance exams were students of this coaching factory. They cannot claim any Goan toppers as they do not have a center in Goa. All the toppers of the Narayana Institute are from outside Goa.
But Goa has its own cramming sweatshops in Akaash Coaching Classes which has a tie-up with Mushtifund and will no doubt soon release a full page advertisement talking about how many students have cleared the IIT entrance exams due to their teaching shops. Similarly, the Dhempe Higher Secondary has an arrangement with the Pace Coaching classes for IIT and Medical entrance exams. It is students of the Mushtifund and the Dhempe Higher Secondary who have links with the coaching classes which turn out the highest number of IIT entrance exam toppers.
The wholly private schools which are weak in science and maths do not figure in the list of those who passed the engineering and medical entrance exams. The biggest coaching center is of course Kota in Rajasthan which has over 50 colleges, preparing three lakh plus students every year. It is the main industry in Kota which is residential and has as many hostels to accommodate the students. We are still trying to grapple with the question of how students manage to get 100 percent marks in the IIT and medical entrance exams. This is because of the nature of the exam which is a computerized one-line question and multiple choice exam where marks are given for every question attempted successfully from a bank of questions. These test are primarily memory tests and have no correlation to the aptitude of the students or their real proficiency in engineering or medicine.
Indeed, all the stalwarts in engineering and medicine ranging from Narayan Murthy to Sunder Pichai of Google, never went to coaching classes as Kota didn’t exist then. In fact, Sudha Murthy did her engineering from a little known college in Hubli in Karnataka and went on to do her Masters and PhD from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru.

MONSTER DELTIN CASINO
AND a last stray thought for yet another Saturday on the new Deltin casino vessel. The group of citizens opposing the entry of the new casino vessel headed by freedom fighter Libby Lobo Sardesai, has made an interesting discovery. Under the Right to Information Act 2005 they have found that it is Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant who cleared the entry of the vessel, overruling rejection by the secretary for ports, PS Reddy, a senior IAS officer.
Reddy has a tradition of standing up to the government. Reddy closed down all the liquor shops of the Curchorem constituency represented by a BJP minister Ramrao Dessai during Parrikar’s times. This was for violating the model code of conduct. Parrikar had Reddy removed from the post of Excise Commissioner at the instance of Ramrao Dessai. I was involved in helping the reinstatement of PS Reddy over two decades ago. It has been revealed in the high court in response to the PIL that the monster casino vessel travelled from the Udupi shipyard in Karnataka to Goa without a license.
