THINK OF FLOOD-AFFECTED ASSAM

IT is widely known that the recent devastating Brahmaputra river floods in Assam have left many of its people  badly devastated and homeless. Street Providence Goa has been reaching out with much needed aid to the flood-affected people in Nazira Block, Sivasagar District, and it has appealed to Goans to donate generously to help people get back to normal life anew. It has already distributed spades, hand shovels, metal baskets, bundles of rope and other tools to clear and rebuild damaged homes and their surroundings. QUEPEM TEMPLE SEEKS PROBE

THE Shree Chandreshwar Bhutnath Saunsthan has sought an immediate joint inspection and demarcation of its property at Survey No 2/3, Amona over alleged unauthorized entry and interference. The complaint seeks verification of any occupation, fencing, construction, or other activity in the land. Temple mahajans say they are seeking only a transparent verification of records and protection of the devasthan’s property. The allegations are subject to verification by the authorities. 

‘ENTERTAINMENT’ AT AGUADA JAIL PREMISES!

A COMPLAINT has been submitted over an Instagram reel allegedly showing people engaging in recreational activities inside the Aguada Fort and jail premises. The complainant is Shweta Gandhi, daughter of freedom fighter Rameshwar Lanjekar, she complaints that the visuals deeply hurt her sentiments given the historical significance of the site and its connection with Goa’s freedom struggle. She has urged concerned authorities to verify whether the activities shown were permitted and take appropriate action if required. She also calls for greater respect and dignity to be maintained at historically significant sites associated with the sacrifices of freedom fighters.  

CMYK CELEBRATING WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

PRASAD Pankar’s CMYK Academy of Photography is all set to celebrate World Photography Day on Sunday, August 16 at 11am. An exhibition-cum-contest of photographs taken by students of the academy on the topic — The Life & Times of Goan Fishermen — will mark the event. The celebration takes place at Angan De Mira at Big Foot Art, Loutalim, and the winner will be awarded the late Margarida Gomes Pereira e Araujo Alvares rolling trophy.

Internationally acclaimed portrait artist Harshada Kerkar is the  honored chief guest and senior photographer pKarnati Ugandhara Rao, senior photographer will be felicitated on the occasion.

CMYK Academy conducts Photography classes to impart the complete fundamentals of photography, practice with SLR and manual cameras and provide advance tips on planning, zoom burst, metering systems, creative use of Flash, outdoor photography and an introduction to portrait lighting using studio lights. There’s also a diploma course in Fashion Photography and other advanced courses.

This is the 20th years that CMYK is holding this exhibition at the Big Foot, it will stay open till August 31, 2026.

DOMINO MUMBAI OUTLET

THE  Food & Drug administration has shut down four Domino PIaza outlets in Mumbai for reportedly poor hygiene and unsanitary conditions. The FDA claims that perishable items like cheese were not stored in proper conditions and they found flies and other vermin in the kitchen of these food outlets.

BEWARE ANALOGUE PANEER!

NOT all food items claiming to be made  of paneer are from dairy products. Traditionally, paneer is made out of curdled milk. Now the FDA folk have discovered that paneer made from vegetable oil is being used by hotels and restaurants, as this is a cheaper option to natural dairy milk paneer or India’s much loved cottage cheese. Though this analogue paneer is not yet banned outright, the outlets have inform customers about how their paneer is not not really paneer but paneer alternative or clone.

BONDERAM IN DIVAR

INDEPENDENCE Day is celebrated in Goawith the Bonderam Festival in Malar on Divar Island. The event is scheduled between 10.30am and 10pm and is free for all. The festival commemorates old disputes over land boundaries during Portuguese rule. Villagers traditionally knocked down boundary walls with bamboo weapons call “fotashes”. Today this is recreated in the form of mock battles, colorful floats, music and dancing. Independence in Goa also means the distribution of the banana or turmeric leaf steamed sweet called pattoleo.

JAW RECONSTRUCTED USING LEG BONE!

THE dental doctors at Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), Moradabad (UP) have emerged as a ray of hope for 25-year-old Kishan, a painter from Bilari. A team of doctors from the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Teerthanker Mahaveer Dental College & Research Centre, successfully reconstructed his jaw using a fibula bone harvested from his leg. Thus, giving Kishan the unforgettable gift of a new lease of life. Kishan, who had been suffering excruciating pain, will now after the jaw reconstruction surgery be able to eat and enjoy his favorite foods and also smile freely.  Due to his condition, he was unable to open his mouth completely.

The doctors performed this rare and complex surgery, removing the affected right lower jaw and replacing it with a reconstructed jaw. According to them if the affected jaw had not been removed in time, the lesion had a high potential for malignancy  A special feature of the surgery was that the new jaw was reconstructed using the patient’s own fibula bone.

The entire surgery was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. From hospital admission and diagnostic investigations to surgery and medicines, all facilities were provided free. Such a surgery would cost approximately Rs2–3lakh in a private hospital. The rare operation lasted nearly five hours and involved major challenges such as preserving the nerves and vital structures associated with the jaw, controlling blood loss, protecting healthy teeth and surrounding tissues, and carefully harvesting the fibula without damaging or fracturing the bone.

The surgery was performed under the leadership of Prof Deepak Thakur, Head of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr Nakul Chaudhary, Dr Shubham Mishra, Dr Mimansa Daftary, along with PG residents Dr Shreya Chatterjee, Dr Pragya Sharma, Dr Rushabh Raut and Dr Shubhangi Goyen, were part of the surgical team. Prof Pradeep Tangade, Principal of the Dental College, and Dr Ankita Jain, Vice Principal, congratulated the entire team for the rare and complicated surgery. Such surgery is performed only at a few major hospitals across the country and  performing at TMU is a matter of pride for the institution.

Kishan, a resident of Bilari in Moradabad district, had been suffering dental pain and swelling for nearly two years. He was unable to open his mouth completely and could not chew his food properly. He sought  treatment from local but his condition did not improve. He eventually TMU Hospital where he was  advised a CBCT scan. This revealed extensive destruction of bone on the right side of his lower jaw. An initial biopsy diagnosed the lesion as an ameloblastoma.

Ameloblastoma is not a cancerous tumor, but it is a locally aggressive tumor that can spread extensively within the jaw. One of its significant characteristics is that patients may not notice any symptoms during the early stages. By the time the tumor is detected, it may have extensively destroyed the jawbone. Prof Deepak Thakur, Head of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Teerthanker Mahaveer University, Moradabad, has performed approximately 1,500 surgeries over his 19 years professional career.
