HI MUMBAI MERI JAAN BUT…
Life & Living, Oct 03- Oct 09, 2026 October 2, 2026Funny or not funny. How many dream of a home of their own in New York in the making in India! Yeh hai Mumbai meri jaan on rise and ever rising high and higher… for all the nouveau riche young gen couples who work a la slaves and earn in lakhs, and crores…this time around I saw towering suburban Mumbai, seeking to touch the sky, with damages zooming from Rs1.5 crore to Rs100 crore, competing Trump Tower clones and wannabees, towering even higher in once peaceful surburban Parel, Worli, Marine Drive, Sion, Chembur…the less said the better. Give me the old hugging the land close real green havens of old any day, these new towering seductive skyscrapers, all amenities laid on… going up 30 floors plus, plus, fill my heart with creepy crawly feelings! I think I’ll come back to Goa, don’t laugh about the ironies here. This is to say I caught up a very dear friend from Kolkatta, Mita Sen and hubby Kishore, at son’s 27th floor swanky apartment in Parel…six tower blocks, all linked on 17th floor for rest and recreation needs. Some efficient security here not to mention the discipline in parking, etc. Sigh! Needless to say I am looking for my familiar old Bombay pockets still around here and there as heritage…..and no matter what I will continue sleeping in my late mother’s room here in Juhu family home for another week for salutary lessons on how to live today, tomorrow, at least a week more. A few clicks to ask, is this what Goa wants to be like, like high-rise Mumbai?
Be amused or not! Re-visiting Mumbai wet market of the very best roadside kind in East Vile Parle suburbia…as they say in Hindi films, yeh hai Bumbai, meri jaan! A few clicks to stay alive today, my third day in the vicinity of somewhere aroundabout Juhu…in seach of funny, familiar feelings, to feel old or young again, enjoyyyyy till doomsday!
