COOKING UP AN AI FOOD ISLAND

THE students and faculty of Kamakshi College of Culinary Arts at Verna have recreated an AI generated tropical using food items. Dill and basil leaves make up palm trees, and food ingredients . Dill and asil leaves were used for palm trees, vegetables broccoli and vegetables and lettuce form the landscape, biscuits and bread make the structures…the display also features a cucumber volcano, jelly water, fruit dolphins and a sushi boat filled with Greek salad, etcetera. Faculty chief Playton has set the exercises to test the culinary creativity of the students participating in the competitions.

DAIVADNYA SAMAJ FELICITATES TOPPERS

THE Daivadnya Samaj, Margao, felicitated students of Std X and Std XII from Goa Board, CBSE and ICSE board at a function held on July 19, 2026 at Daivadnya Bhavan, Margao. The program was inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by dignitaries present. Daivadnya Samaj President Ramakant Raikar gave the welcome address in which he highlighted the importance of education in life, he urged parents to support their children in achieving goals.

Others who spoke included Prof Venkatesh Raikar, Director, KLE Hubballi and former Vice Chancellor,  Sanjay Ghodawat University, who was the chief guest. He encouraged students to pursue careers of their choice and to put in extra efforts to clear entrance examinations and national level competitive exams such as UPSC.  

All students from the community who secured more than 85% in Std X were felicitated. There were special felicitations for Yoganand Nagvenkar from Mercel who was honoured with the Dnyaneshwari Puraskar, and also Dr Swarali Bhaskar Verlekar who recently completed MBBS.  

Std XII Toppers: Overall – Kanti Deepak Nagvekar, Minisha Samir Lotlikar, Adhvika Gurunath Shirodkar; Science – Shreya Mahabaleshwar Rivonkar, Harsh Laximon Chodnecar, Tanishka Subhash Kolvekar; Arts – Tejal Santosh Vernekar, Ayushi Jeetendra Lotlikar, Prerna Deepak Shirodkar; Commerce – Isha Narendra Vernekar, Avni Lotlikar.

Vote of thanks was by Rohit Vernekar, event was anchored by Dipti Ashish Nagvekar and coordinated by Prashil Salkar, all under the guidance of Upendra Madkaikar (chairman, Education Cell).  

DAIVADNYA CARROM TOURNAMENT 2026

THE  6th edition of Daivadnya Carrom Tournament 2026 was successfully conducted on July 26, 2026 at Daivadnya Hall, Ponda. The event was organized by the Akhil Gomantakiya Daivadnya Brahmin Youth Association and Ponda Daivadnya Brahmin Samaj and was supported by the Goa Carrom Association.

Sampada Amey Nagvekar, secretary-AGDBYA and Deepak Lotlikar, president-Ponda Daivadnya Samaj welcomed the guests. The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 85 players across various age categories, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport within the community. Present as chief guest were Sunil Pandurang Karekar (Retd, superintendent engineer—PWD.

 Shaurya Prajyot Chodankar was felicitated for his remarkable achievements in cricket. Winners of the Tournament: Kid’s category Winner: Aarush Lotlikar   / Runner-up: Shriyan Vernekar

Women category Winner: Alka Chodankar  / Runner-up: Shruti Vernekar. Veteran’s category Winner: Shyamrao Raikar /Runner-up: Guiresh Bandodkar. Men Category Winner: Rahul Lotlikar/  Runner-up: Rutvik Nagzarkar.               

 The event concluded with a vote of thanks by AGDBYA treasurer, Rahul Lotlikar, and a promise to return next year with even more excitement and participation.

SFX PLANT FESTIVAL

THE annual St Francis Xavier plants festival is being held at Siolim between Friday, Aug21 to Sunday, Aug26 from 10am to 6pm. This one of a kind festival has been organized for more than a decade by students and staff of the SFX School. It began on the initiative of Miguel Braganza with a lot of support from prominent Siolim residents including Alexis, the cartoonist artist who lives in Siolim. The festival features several competitions and put up various categories of plants for display and also for sale (by nurseries) during the festival. A not to be missed event for plant lovers.

WE, THE RIVERS OF GOA

CAPTAIN Nitin Dhond, who developed the  Wildernest resort at Chorla ghats, is making a presentation on rivers, river basins and mountains at 6pm on Aug 26, at Sadhana Dell Arte in Merces near Panjim. The talk has been organized by the Goa Foundation and its focus will be also on protecting the Mhadei and Malaprabha river forests and basins and in fact the entire living eco-system which yields water and food and keeps both wildlife alive and humans alive in a myriad ways.

TRIBUTE TO MAGSONS

KIRIT and Andrea Maganlal are organizing a walk down memory lane at Magsons as a tribute and thanksgiving with friends, customers, vendors and staff who have supported them for the last 37 years. This Maganlal couple are handing over the baton to a sister organization — Magsons Gujarat. The Meet and Greet event will happen between 6pm and 7pm at the Panjim Gymkhana hall followed by a musical event.

RATS & COCKROACHES FOREVER!

PRESIDENT Vijay Shetty of the All India Restaurants Association is currently being reported to have informed Director of the Food & Drugs Administration Tukaram Mundhe in Maharashtra that nothing can be done about rats and cockroaches in the kitchens of restaurants. Vijay Shetty calls them minor transgressions and hotels should not be punished. All this is in the wake of crack down action being taken by the now popular “Singham” Tukaram Mundhe against restaurants,  and even hi fi clubs like Otters Club, for failure to maintain sanitation and hygiene standards in their kitchens catering to food for the public.

VOICES OF GOA

A KARAOKE Hindi song competition is being organized by the Rajdeep builders group at the  Goa University auditorium sited at Taleigao plateau. The event is scheduled for Aug29 from 4pm onwards and the grand finale is open to all music lovers and the public.

11th CARL D’SILVA MEMORIAL LECTURE

THIS is to inform your readers that the 11th Carl D’Silva Memorial Lecture is to be held on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the Terminal Banquet Hall, Caculo Mall, in Panjim, from 4.30pm onwards. It may be remembered that the late Carl D’Silva was  a renowned wildlife artist from Goa, much celebrated for his illustrations,  innumerable ornithological field guides. Carl D’Silva was also one of the founding members and a mentor when the Goa Bird Conservation Network began as an informal group.

This annual memorial lecture honours his enduring contribution to bird conservation, art and natural history. This year we are also honoured to have with us Pankaj Sekhsaria. An author and researcher, he has worked extensively on environmental governance, conservation and the Andaman & Nicobar islands. His talk, “Great Nicobar: An Island on the Brink”, will examine the environmental, social and legal dimensions of the proposed Great Nicobar mega infrastructure project, and explore what is at stake for one of India’s most unique island ecosystems.

Alongside the memorial lecture Pankaj Sekhsaria’s latest book “Island on Edge” which explores the Great Nicobar project and the future of India’s islands, will be released. This event is open to all and especially students, researchers, conservationists, birders and anyone interested in nature and environmental issues. Let us have an evening of thought-provoking discussion on issues which impact us all.
