GOA FDA SHOULD FOLLOW MUNDHE EXAMPLE!

GOA FDA SHOULD FOLLOW MUNDHE EXAMPLE!

Aug 22- Aug 28, 2026, Stray Thoughts

AND a few stray thoughts for yet another Saturday. For a Saturday following the week when we notice the total absence of any food safety initiatives by the Goa Food & Drugs Administration. For a Saturday following the week when the Churchill brothers finally succeeding in their ambition of entering the Indian Super League Football Championship. For a Saturday following the week on the subject of all the voluntary conversions of Hindus to Christianity and Islam in Modi’s Hindutva Bharat.

SINGHAM TUKARAM
AND a few stray thoughts on the total absence of any food safety initiatives by the Goa Food & Drugs Administration. The extent of the scams in the production and availability of various kinds of food items both in retail outlets and restaurants has been exposed by Tukaram Mundhe, the head of the Maharashtra FDA. The FDA in Maharashtra has sealed the factory of Parle Agro, which produces the popular Fruity and Appy so-called fruit-based drinks. The Maharashtra FDA has seized all the stocks of “kaju katli” at the Ambani-operated Reliance Retail Smart Bazar. In Maharashtra the IAS officer Mundhe raided the canteen of the Sachivalaya (Secretariat) which is the Headquarters of the Maharashtra government.
“Singham” Mundhe (which he is being called) has closed down the canteens and restaurants of the prestigious Otters Club in Bandra. Mundhe has banned the sale of fryums and sweets in school canteens, including in the Dhirubhai Ambani International School run by Nita Ambani. Overnight, the “chicken lollypops” have lost their bright red color, and “jalebi” have returned to their original natural yellow color. All this is because of the crackdown on the use of artificial colours which are widely used in food items.
SADLY, the FDA in Goa does not have the guts to check the food at the Secretariat canteen in Porvorim. No action has been taken against all the premium restaurants including Kokum Curry, Peep Kitchen, Copperleaf and Ritz Classic for not displaying their FDA licenses prominently as they are required to do. Their kitchen have not been inspected in the recent past, or perhaps never, by the Goa FDA.
There is no crackdown on analogue paneer which is now made from vegetable oils and sold as honest paneer in dairy product outlets and sections of shopping malls. In Goa the color of the “chicken lollipop” still continues to be a dangerously bright red.
Goa, being a tourism destination, there is even a greater need to check food safety. There have been reports of tourists falling ill after having eaten lunch or dinner meals at a popular restaurant in Old Goa. There have been no checks on the Sodexo-run kitchen which supplies food to patients at the Goa Medical College & Hospital and the Yoo canteen outlets. There are no checks yet on the kind of food sold at the Sharda Mandir canteen or the Law College, or indeed, the canteens of the Demphe and other colleges in Goa.
Are we waiting for a major tragedy before the Goa FDA wakes up to the threat posed by unsafe food and drinks to both Goans and tourists?

CHURCHILL BROS SUCCEED
AND a few stray thoughts on the Churchill Brothers finally succeeding in their ambition of entering the Indian Super League Football Championship. Though Churchill brothers were cheated of their entry into the ISL on merit, they have succeeded by taking over the Jamshedpur Football Club. The Tata-owned Jamshedpur Football Club has transferred its assets including the players on contract to Churchill brothers for a token of Rs100. Many Goan Football teams owned by prominent industrialist such as the Dempo’s have decided to opt out of the Indian Super League. The ISL created by the Ambanis has been abandoned by them and has been taken over by the India Football Federation. The private clubs are opting out because the IFL is demanding a huge registration fee of Rs15 crore. As of now only the Deltin Casino- owned Goa FC is part of the ISL. Srinivas Dempo is on record that the fees charged by IFA are too huge.
Churchill brothers are among the first individuals/families to promote football in Goa. The Churchill Brothers FC was started in 1988 as the Varca Club. The club has rapidly established itself as the formidable team both at the state level and the national level. Churchill brothers won the Durand Cup in 2007 followed by the Eye League national title in 2008- 2009. In 2021 Churchill finished as the runners-up in the eye league narrowly losing the championship to Gokulam Kerala FC due to a controversial decision. Churchill finished at the top of the 2024-2025 I-League but was not promoted to the Super League.
The Churchill brothers have always paid their players very handsomely. They were also the first to recruit high-quality foreign players, particularly Africans. Like the Nigerian striker Frank Onyeka. It may be recalled that Churchill Brothers hired Brahmanand Sangalkar, the captain of the Salgaocar team, which won the Santosh Trophy. Our salute to Churchill Alemao and his daughter Valanka Alemao, who now runs the Churchill Brothers sports teams.

ONGOING CONGRESS WARS
AND a few stray thoughts on the ongoing war between the new president of the Congress Girish Chodankar and former president Amit Patkar. The Congress High Command abruptly removed Amit Patkar without even consulting him or the other office bearers. Apparently, even the South Goa Member of Parliament Captain Viriato Was not taken into confidene. Girish Chodankar, who is close to Rahul Gandhi, was arbitrarily imposed on the Congress in the state.
The former Congress president, who is a mining contractor, is allegedly instigating a revolt against Girish Chodankar. It may be recalled that Manisha Usgaokar was suspended for speaking out against Girish Chodankar. On the eve of the visit of the Congress party president, Malikarjum Kharge, over a hundred booth-level workers resigned from the party. Amit Patkar has been complaining that he was not allowed to speak at the convention organized for the booth-level workers to meet the congress president. Girish Chodankar successfully concluded an alliance with Chief Minster Joseph Vijay in Tamil Nadu but has had no success in Goa. The Goa Forward Party has rejected talks for an alliance. Only the splinter group of the Goa Revolutionary Party headed by Viresh Borkar has responded so far. If there is no alliance and the Congress is divided, it will only benefit the BJP.

VOLUNTARY CONVERSIONS
AND a few stray thoughts on all the voluntary conversions of Hindus to Christianity and Islam in Modi’s Hindutva Bharat. It has not been widely known that the choreographer Remo D’Souza who made movies like “Any Body Can Dance” (ABCD) and “ABCD 2” was born as Ramesh Gopi Nair. Ironically, Ramesh Gopi Nair was born and grew up in the home state of Narendra Modi, Gujarat, in Jamnagar. Jamnagar is the headquarters of the Reliance Group where Anant Ambani’s wedding was celebrated. Both Remo’s parents were Hindus who believed in Jesus Christ. Remo embraced Christianity when he was 15. Remo adopted the surname of D’Souza, though he retains his family name Gopi.
Remo now describes his spirituality as going beyond a single religion and has a shrine of Ganesh and Lord Shiva at his home. The famous music composer AR Rahman was also originally a Hindu who embraced Islam because of her foster mother, who nurtured him. Among the most famous Christians in the country there is the high-profile favorite lawyer of the BJP, Harish Salve. It may be recalled that Harish Salve appeared for the Indian wrestler Phogat, who failed a weight test at the Olympics. Harish Salve’s father was a Maharashtra Hindu. His mother Amriti was also a Hindu. Salve has publicly acknowledged his Christian background. It is widely known that before he adopted the name Dilip Kumar, the actor was Yusuf Khan. He continued to be a practicing Muslim till the end of his life. The wife of Sunil Dutt and mother of Sanjay Dutt, Nargis, was Muslim.

DONALD TRUMP & ECI
AND a last stray thought on Donald Trump praising the Election Commission of India. Donald Trump is having major problems trying to fix the election in the United States. In the United States, different states followed different practices, including the traditional ballot box. Nobody uses the controversial electronic voting machines. As far as we know, the United States does not conduct special intensive revision which have become notorious as SIR in India. Congress has suggested that Donald Trump should offer American citizenship to Gyanesh Kumar who is the chief election commission in India.
