WEEKEND UPDATES
May 16- May 22, 2026, WEEKEND UPDATES May 15, 2026EVENTFUL WEEKEND
THIS is just to brief readers up on interesting engagements happening this weekend. Remember Saturday, May 16 – there’ll be a screening of the film “Trikaal” which was filmed in Goa and features the late actress Leela Naidu. The film was shot entirely at the ancestral home or casa of the late caricaturist Mario de Miranda at Loutalim. The screening is taking place at the Sunaparanta Arts Center at Altinho Panjim at 6.45 pm and seating arrangements will be on a first come first serve basis.
Next to make a note of is a food gala called Panjim Potluck at the Garcia de Orta garden in Panjim on May 16-17, from 5pm onwards.
SHOCKING DEATH OF DR KETAN BHATIKAR

WE are shocked by the sudden passing away of senior physiotherapist and Congress candidate Dr Ketan Bhatikar for the Ponda bye-elections. Dr Ketan Bhatikar was travelling to Belgavi via the Anmod ghats and he stopped his vehicle for a break. During the halt it is claimed a snake bit him and he was rushed to the PHC Dharbandora but was declared on arrival at 3.30am on Friday, May 15, 2026. The real cause of death is to be confirmed after the post-mortem at the District Hospital in Madgaon. It may be remembered that Dr Ketan Bhatikar pioneered sports physiotherapy in Goa and was a much loved social worker. The Congress had nominated him for the Ponda bye-election which followed the passing away of late chief minister Ravi Naik. The bye-election was cancelled at the last moment when it was realized that the term of the MLA would have been just one year.
BLACK DAY ON MAY 16

A Hindutva group has called for the observance of a Black Day on Saturday, May 16. The claim is being made that it was on May 16, 1638 that St Francis Xavier had written to the Pope in Rome and the King of Portugal to send the Inquisition to Goa for punishing bad Christians or so reportedly. It may be recalled that Gautam Khattar had earlier launched a vicious attack on St Francis Xavier at an event to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram at Vasco da Gama.
TEAM DRIVER SPARED, DEALER SUSPENDED

THE Transport Department has suspended the trading license of Bavaria Motors, which has the agency for BMW and Mini Cooper, the premium car driven by the young 20-years-old Darius Dias who was involved in the hit-and-run case on the approach road to the Taj Horizon Resort at Dona Paula. Two employees working at the reception of the resort were killed in this incident on April 7, 2026. The young driver was apparently driving the Mini Cooper without any registration papers and he was in a state of drunkenness, he was driving the car at a very high speed when the accident happened. The trading license of the dealer has been suspended for two years for releasing a vehicle without insurance and registration to the Dias family. However, there is no news of the arrest of the young drunken driver whose parents own the Myles High bakery and confectionary outlet at Patto district of Panjim.
TEACHERS ON LECTURE BASIS

THE State government has invited applications for filling up vacancies of 256 teachers in government colleges. However, the majority of the teachers are to be employed on a contract basis or a lecture basis. The employment of teachers on a lecture basis reduces them to the status of casual manual labor. They have no security of any kind, nor will they be entitled to any of the benefits which lecturers on a regular basis get. Interestingly, the government insists that private aided colleges can only hire college teachers on a full time basis.
BURSTING OF WATER PIPE LINES

EVEN as the water level in the Goa’s lakes have fallen to a record low in the absence of adequate pre-monsoon rains, a number of pipe bursts have been reported all over Goa. Last week, the whole of south Goa did not have water for 48 hours — due to a disruption in the Selaulim reservoir dam pipelines. Now in the latest instance is a pipeline burst in Chimbel and the residents will be affected by a shortage of water supply to Tiswadi. The ground reality is that most of the pipelines are more than 40 years old and are in need of being urgently replaced.
