MALE COPS CAN’T TOUCH WOMEN

Unwanted or sexual touching, squeezing women’s breasts, tearing her clothes, or deliberately assaulting her is not authorised. Merely because she is detained or arrested by the police. It is alleged that Amreen Shaikh was pushed into a police van without any arrest warrant and that her clothes were torn in the police van when there was no woman police officer. The detention happened after 7 pm. The criminal procedure makes it clear that women can’t be arrested after sunset or before sunrise. Cases can be filed against the police for molesting women in custody including grouping and deliberate tearing of clothes. A Delhi journalist has claimed that the police touched her private parts. Police officers can be arrested under the protection of children from sexual offenses if they are minors or for rape if they are major. The medical report is awaited and strict action to be taken against Goa police who molested Amreen Shaikh.

WHO ARE THE HOUTHI REBELS?

The Houthis are an armed political and religious movement based in Yemen. They are also known as ‘Ansar Allah’. They are supported by the leadership of Iran. The Houthis took control of Yemen’s capital, Sana’a in 2014 and have remained a major force in the country. The Houthis have launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, which is supporting the United States in the war against Iran. The Saudi airport has been closed down after missile attacks from the Houthis. A large number of Indian worked in Saudi Arabia.

BEST RESTAURANT IN GOA

Heading the list of best restaurants in Goa is Cavatina in Benaulim. It is a chef-driven restaurant known for a modern interpretation of Goans favourite dishes and seasonal ingredients. Mums Kitchen, which has been listed second, has declined in quality and service and has only suitable for people who want overpriced steaks. The Fisherman Wharf, located in Panaji in the Campal area offers seafood and as a live band. The Blacksheep Bistro claims to specialise in contemporary cooking and inventive dishes. The Bistro was the scene of a bitter clash between two groups of young Goan party animals at 3 a.m. Bomras in Anjuna claims to be a famous Bormas specialty restaurant, which I personally found overpriced and badly cooked food. Among my personal favourites are the Martins Beach Corner in Betalbatim, the Ritzz Classic in Panaji and the Copperleaf in Porvorim and Panaji. My latest discoveries include the restaurant at the Ginger Taj Hotel in Dona Paula and the Dosa Bar at Miramar.

OBSTACLES IN RECOVERING YOUR EPF BALANCE IN INDIA

Individual who have not been able to recover even their own share of contributions to the Employees Provident Fund should hold the Provident Fund commission accountant. Cases should be filed against the provident fund commission for mis-apportion for money. Recovering money accumulated in an Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) account can become a frustrating exercise, particularly for retired employees, senior citizens and workers whose employers have closed down or failed to maintain proper records.

The money belongs to the employee. Yet procedural hurdles, technical failures and delays can make access difficult.

The seven major obstacles

1. Aadhaar and UAN mismatches: Differences in names, dates of birth or other records can prevent an online claim from being processed.

2. Unverified bank details: An incorrect account number, IFSC code or bank-account verification failure can result in rejection.

3. Missing employer approval: Some claims require employer-side verification, creating difficulties when the employer has shut down, changed ownership or is uncooperative.

4. Missing service records: Employees who changed jobs, worked for several establishments or have old paper-based records may struggle to consolidate their accounts.

5. Inactive or forgotten UANs: Workers may have multiple PF accounts, forgotten login credentials or balances that were never transferred from previous employers.

6. Repeated claim rejections: Applicants may receive vague rejection reasons, leaving them uncertain about what documents or corrections are required.

7. Slow grievance redressal: Complaints can lead to repeated requests for documents without a clear explanation of when the balance will be released.

What has the government done to simplify withdrawals?

EPFO announced reforms in April 2025 removing the requirement to upload a cheque-leaf image or attested passbook for online claims, and removing employer approval for bank-account seeding after bank verification. Transfer procedures and profile corrections have also been simplified in many cases.

Despite these measures, difficulties can remain where records are inconsistent, service details are missing or claims are disputed.

Where can employees complain?

  • Official EPFO grievance portal: Register an EPFO complaint. You can submit supporting documents and track the complaint.
  • UMANG app: Offers EPFO services, including grievance registration.

Never pay an unauthorised agent to file a grievance; EPFO warns that these services are available free through official channels.
