GZA’S `KUCH BHI’ FRIENDSHIP EVENING

THE Ganga Zuari Academy is having a Kuch Bhi afternoon going into evening to promote music and friendship at the Fern Residency at Caranzalem on Sunday, August, 2026. All GZA members and family are invited for this casual get-together which will see music and dance competitions in community spirit. Whether you want to perform or just relax and unwind with conversation and togetherness, this may be just what you are looking for to beat loneliness. DD KOSAMBI BIOGRAPHY

THE first ever biography in English on the mathematician and Konkani icon DD Kosambi was launched at the International Center Goa on Friday, July 31, 2026. The biography is written by Ram Ramaswamy who is the chair of the DD Kosambi Center in the Goa University. There was a discussion of the book by eminent scholars including Dr Vivek Monteira, General Secretary of the CPM, Prof Parag Prabhu and Prof Kaustubh Naik (a PhD student in the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania). DD Kosambi was primarily a mathematician who believed in integrating the physical sciences with the social sciences. Kosambi is considered the father of modern Konkani and is an icon for Devanagari Konkani mogi. But unlike the present day Konkani mogi,  Kosambi was never rigid and made major contributions in mathematics, history and archeology.  Kosambi was primarily a Marxist.

ALPHA KIDS BEGIN PROTEST

SCHOOL CHILDREN in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are on strike demanding minimal facilities. A school in Uttar Pradesh which has 150 plus students has only a single teacher, it has been revealed that there are more than one lakh schools in UP alone which are single teacher schools. Students are now protesting that the schools do not have basic infrastructure like benches, water supply and separate toilets for boys and girls. It may be noted that there was an agitation by Amreen Sheikh in the Dhempe College of Arts in Goa to provide basic sanitation facilities to women students.

INDIAN HOCKEY TURNS SAFFRON

THE traditional blue jerseys worn by India’s national hockey teams have now turned saffron. The Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams are all set to compete in the international hockey tournament being held in Belgium. The Union sports minister has reportedly insisted that both the teams should switch to saffron jerseys. Leading hockey players have strongly protested. It may not be far when the blue jerseys of the Indian cricket team also turn saffron. Jay Shah, the son of Amit Shah, is now the president of the International Cricket Board.

META NUDITY SOFTWARE

META has been offering software which can strip the clothes of both women and men and enable you to see them in their naked glory. There have been strong objections to this from the human rights groups. Indeed, the software was challenged in the US courts. Meta has declared that it will not withdraw the “nudifying” software. Incidentally, Meta also offers artificial intelligence powered sunglasses in collaboration with Ray Ban which will enable you to take photographs and record conversations.  These glasses were used  by police to generate facial recognition images of the protestors at Jantar Mantar.

GOA’S FIRST VETERINARY ART COLLEGE

STUDENTS from Goa no longer have to go to Maharashtra or Karnataka for veterinary courses. Goa now has its own veterinary college in Corti in Ponda. The college will begin classes on September 1, 2026. All the present vets in Goa have been trained outside Goa. With the large pet population Goans will welcome the setting up of the veterinary college. This expands the opportunity for students wanting to be extra kind to animals in the state of Goa. Goa’s veteran vet Gustav Pinto is part of the faculty.

GCCI DELEGATION URGES WAR-FOOTING REDEVELOPMENT OF DONA PAULA JETTY

A delegation from the Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) recently met with Kedar Naik, chairperson of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), to present key recommendations regarding the upcoming redevelopment and infrastructure upgradation of the iconic Dona Paula Jetty. The GCCI delegation comprised Chandrakant Gawas (chairman, GCCI Logistics Committee),  Sanjay Amonkar (director general), Ambika Kamat Dhakankar (deputy director) and Sanket Kaskar (foreign trade officer).

The delegation formally submitted a representation highlighting the importance of executing the redevelopment project on a war footing. Pointing out that the jetty had previously undergone a five-year closure before reopening in 2023, GCCI expressed concerns regarding potential disruptions to local vendors, taxi operators, and the broader hospitality sector. The Chamber urged the GTDC to enforce strict contractor timelines to ensure a swift turnaround.

Key recommendations submitted by GCCI”

Ro-Ro Ferry Integration: Introducing Roll-On/Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) ferry services operating between Dona Paula Jetty and Mormugao Harbour. This initiative would serve as a major catalyst for tourism, provide scenic coastal transit, and offer commuters a time-saving water transport alternative to reduce road congestion.

  • World-Class Public Infrastructure: Upgrading public amenities, including clean drinking water, well-maintained public conveniences, designated pathways, proper lighting, and clear signage.
  • Universal Accessibility & Space Management: Incorporating ramps for senior citizens and differently-abled visitors, alongside organized, aesthetic spaces for local vendors.

 Kedar Naik has assured the GCCI team that he will look into the matter thoroughly and emphasize timely completion. The GCCI will be also be taken into consideration for future planning initiatives aimed at boosting Goa’s tourism and trade infrastructure. GCCI is  committed to working alongside Goa  government and tourism authorities to protect local livelihoods and elevate Goa’s standing as a world-class destination.

NORTH GOA DMF AWARENESS PROGRAMS

THE North Goa District Mineral Foundation Trust (NGDMFT) organized an awareness program on the objectives, activities and implementation framework of the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) in the mining-affected areas of North Goa held at the Municipal Hall, Sankhalim on July 29, 2026. Dr Sachin Tendulkar delivered a detailed presentation highlighting the objectives of the DMF and the various developmental activities undertaken in mining-affected areas through the trust. He explained that the foundation is committed to improving the quality of life of people residing in mining-affected villages by supporting initiatives in sectors such as education, healthcare, drinking water, sanitation, infrastructure, livelihood generation and environmental conservation.

Dr Tendulkar appealed to the Swayampurna Mitras to actively participate in the developmental process by identifying the priority needs and works in their respective villages. The  program familiarized the participants with the implementation framework of the trust and encouraged greater community participation in planning and execution of development works in mining-affected areas. Present were the HoD’s of various government departments, Swayampurna Mitras, representatives of local bodies, officials and other stakeholders from the mining-affected areas of North Goa.

Member Secretary Ratnakant Govekar welcomed the dignitaries, invitees, and participants. In his address he highlighted the objectives of the North Goa District Mineral Foundation Trust (NGDMFT) and explained that the awareness program had been organized to educate and benefit the local communities as well as other stakeholders in the mining-affected areas. He also emphasized the importance of active public participation in ensuring the effective implementation of the trust’s welfare initiatives.

The  hands-on workshop will teach you to transform everyday materials into unique, handcrafted jewellery. It’s a session blending creativity with sustainability, to re-imagine waste and create jewelry pieces stylish and meaningful. Take home your own upcycled jewellery! Workshop takes place on Saturday, August 8 from 2.30pm onwards at the MoCA Knowledge Centre, Convent of St John of God, Old Goa (Opp the Museum of Christian Art). Registration: Rs500.
