The US Department of Labor has stopped accepting new applications and processing pending applications under the labor certification program for IT employees. Even American companies like Microsoft have not been spared. It may be noted that most of the major American IT companies like Microsoft and Google are headed by Indian CEOs.

DIGITAL BANKING TRAP

India’s super senior citizens are becoming victims of digital technology. They no longer have the right to bank their own money and cannot depend upon the ability to operate a smart phone. India is banking revolution has produced a paradox. The technology that was introduced to make banking easier is making it extra ordinary difficult for an elderly customer. The senior citizen who once entered a bank with a passbook and a cheque has to update his own passbook on the passbook printer machine. They have to update their passbooks by themselves on the printer machine. The friendly clerk does not wait any longer. If you do not go to the bank or don’t use your account for a long time the bank will not remind. It will only send you a digital message which you may not notice. The bank has the right to shut down the account and send the balance to the Reserve Bank of India. Banks are only for the digitally literate. It is not that the senior citizen deposits the largest amount of money.

GOAN BARS OPEN TILL 5AM

All the bands playing music have to shut down at 11 pm. This includes catholic marriages where song and dance are part of the celebration. In hotels and restaurants, the bar has to be shut down at 11 pm. But there is no such restriction on liquor outlets selling booze. Even in the heart of Panaji city, in residential areas, bars can remain open till 5am. The chief minister Pramod Sawant who is also the home minister of Goa has now claiming that the CCP rules would be revised to ensure that all bars will shut down at 11pm. The chief minister has been very shano (smart). Bars which are not in residential areas are on the beaches will probably be allowed to stay open 24×7. When I first came to Goa in 1983, I was returning home after completing the Herald issue at 6am. I desperately wanted to have a cup of coffee. Somebody pointed to a bar in Caranzalem. I got my coffee but it was not South Indian or instant Nescoffee but feni with coffee flavor.

Following the increase in the repo rate all banks will increase the lending rate. The lending rates in India are the highest in the world. The maximum repo rate in the United States, UK and Japan are below 2%.
