WOMEN PRESIDENT IF GFA

VALANKA ALEMAO, daughter of Churchill Alemao, has been elected as the first woman president of the Goa Football Association (GFA). Valanka has been managing the Churchill Brothers football team for over a decade now. Recently, she negotiated the takeover of the Jamshedpur Football Club owned by the Tata Group. This has given Churchill Brothers a direct entry into the professional league. Valanka is expected to contest the Benaulim Assembly seat in the forthcoming polls to be held in February to be held next year.

NURSES, GERMANY IS WAITING FOR YOU

THE Goa Cabinet presided over Chief Minister Pramod Sawant who has decided to include knowledge of German in the nursing courses in the government nursing colleges and the privately owned Sai Nursing College in Sanqualim which is the CM’s home constituency. While Goa has half-a-dozen private nursing schools there are no jobs for those who pass out with diplomas or even degrees from the government-recognized colleges. In any case all nursing students are only interested in government jobs which offer a minimum of Rs50,000 in contrast to Rs10,000-Rs15,000 offered by private hospitals. Pramod Sawant seems to have done his homework and realized that Goa can export nurses to Germany if they have training in the language. Germany has a serious and continuing shortage of trained nurses, particularly qualified nursing professionals in hospitals and old age homes. Earlier, the UK was the favorite foreign destination but it has lost its status after it quit the European Economic Community. Goan nurses eligible for Portuguese passports may still migrate to Germany.

CARDIOLOGY CONTRACT EXTENDED

IT is not widely known that virtually all the staff ranging from doctors and nurses and technicians in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) of the Goa Medical College & Hospital have been employed on a contract basis. Considering that it is difficult to get qualified people to work in government cardiology departments the salaries offered are much higher in the cardiology department. In the department was started in 2013 by a local cardiovascular surgeon Dr Shirish Borkar and a cardiologist of Goan origin Dr Guruprasad Naik. The Cabinet has decided to extend the contract for the staff of the cardiology department for another five years.

UTPAL PARRIKAR FOR PANJIM

The Bharatiya Janata Party seems to have decided to a lot he Panjim assembly constituency now represented by Babush Monserratte to Utpal Parrikar. During his recent visit to Goa the BJP national president Nabin instructed the Goa BJP president Damu Naik to welcome back prodigal sons. Those likely to return to power to the BJP include former chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar. It may be recalled that Parsekar had resigned from the party when Pramod Sawant was made the chief minister.
